It's a myth that fat people stay warmer, in fact it's the other way around. People with high-powered metabolisms are generally warmer because their body converts food to energy (heat included) more readily. Although it's possible to be fat and have a quick metabolism, it's generally not the case.

Maybe some people are fat because they metabolize food a lot more efficiently - you eat 2000 calories and need to bundle up to keep warm, they eat 2000 calories and they're more than warm enough with shorts on.

That's waste heat since creating heat is not the intention. Waste is not efficient.

Okay, "metabolize food a lot more completely."

Human fat doesn't retain heat like blubber on other animals. The phenomenon of fat people wearing less clothes may be due to their getting hot from the stress of carrying so much extra weight.

The better question is "why are guys who wear shorts in the middle of winter fat?"
And the answer is they mostly stay indoors and don't walk outside much, or they'd be wearing pants.

I am rather fat, and I wear shorts or kilts all year round because its comfortable. I think that the cold is actually a pleasant feeling, on the other hand I hate the heat. btw I live in Boston, so we do get a real winter

It's the opposite for walking sticks like me. I wear pants all year long, even in the 120F summers.

Shorts are cheaper than pants, therefore they dump what little money from the saving into (junk) foods.

It is possible to get anterior knee pain due to cold knees for shorts wearers during cold/wet days.

I wear shorts all year around and i am quite large. It's not that i don't get gold, its just that i have grown to like the feeling of being cold.

I wear shorts during the winter... while I'm running. You can hardly feel it. I'm 6'3" & ~155 pounds... I could probably stand to wear them regularly except during the single digit days... But I prefer pants.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the fat=warm thing, I remember going to the beach with a couple friends one summer. The water was the warmest I'd ever felt it and me and one other guy were really enjoying the waves on boogie boards. We looked over at our friend who was at 3-4% bodyfat since he was on the wrestling team, and he was shivering, his lips were even blue.

its opposite from water to air. In general fat people will be colder than thin people in the air because they have slower metabolisms so they are producing less heat than thinnner people and thin people have better blood flow to their extremeties. However in water its not so much how much heat you are producing becasue water conducts it away very efficiently, it is you ability to keep what you have, so fat people are better because they have better insulation. At least thats what I ahve observed in life. Personally I know I am that way such that I wear shorts in winter and I did not own a long sleeve shirt in my life till the age of 20. However in water if it is cold I am completely imobilised (literally lose muscle control) where fat peopel are fine. Even in warm water I cannot last mroe than about an hour before my metabolism is shot and my body temperature drops.

In the water I shiver and shake like crazy, but on land I'm ok with it, to a point.

I'm 5'6" 118lbs. I'm ok with wearing shorts (to the knees) and a sleeveless muscle shirt no problem when it's about -5*c outside and I'm in the warehouse somewhat sheltered. But being outside all day like that no can do. My job involves me moving and lifting all day, so I'm always active, that keeps me warm.
