Why do external cdrw drives cost so much more?

Why do external cdrw drives cost so much more than similar internal drives? A friend of mine has a case that has only one drive bay(which has a cdr drive) and would like to add a cdrw. I guess the best way is to add an external usb one, right? Or maybe I could swap his parts into a new case and buy an internal cdrw. It's an HP machine and I am not sure all the HP stuff will mate up with a new case. What would you do in this case?

They really only cost a little bit more - and as stated - that covers the added components. But for the small added cost, you get a lot better performance and reliability as you get out of the IDE jail. SCSI, Firewire, and USB 2 make it worthwhile.

I see, what are some good brands and interfaces to look for? I guess USB would be best IF for his setup.

USB 2 or Firewire. There are lots of good external burners. I use QPS and Acom - all Firewire.

No one has mentioned it yet, but you could probably just swap the CD-ROM with a CD-RW, this would keep you from spending more on the drive. Or maybe even get two upgrades at once and get a combo DVD/CD-RW drive, of course these tend to cost a bit more too, so almost the same boat as exernal drives.
