Why do Europena / Japanese car makers have a small engine mindset while American's have a big engine mindset?

You're wrong, Anooj. The reason is because they don't/can't police the world and suck up half the world's export of dino oil, so gas is more expensive? And, we can go into iraq shoot the place up and get free oil whereas [Europeans] gotta pay for it.". Not to mention, Americans are consumption whores, covering it up with things like "safety" and "comfort". Try to get it right next time!

BTW, I give McCarthy's post an 8 out of 10, and yours a 6 out of 10, because you didn't cover the European angle.

heh.

I didn't know the full background behind Europe's so I didn't add anything. I did read up on the Japanese angle so I only talked about that. I wouldn't wanna say things that I didn't know ...now would I? 😛 In any case, McCarthy is most likely older than me...so I should get bonus points for being rational at my age.

My sarcasm-o-meter gives you a 7/10. I expect more dumbass-ness replioes.

"What's your point? Do they really have a choice on how to live? Not really.
I personally try to limit my consumption as much as possible. "

Point is, you're a fvcking hypocrite! We're supposed to drive go-karts, because the rest of the world does (supposedly for conservation reasons ), yet you choose to live in a huge house in comparison to what they do, using lots of natural resources to keep it up.

It's by necessity they live in rabbit hutches, NOT conservation mindedness. It's because of overbearing taxes that Europeans drive eensie-mobiles, NOT conservation mindedness.
Well, since I don't live in a large house, I guess that statement is complete fallacy. In fact, my two bedroom apt. isn't that large at all. Nor does it consume that many resources since I live alone, and don't spend a lot of time there.

You don't have to drive a go-kart, you just don't have to drive a friggin land tank. Plain and simple.
Funny how America always thinks it's the most moral, or the most right.

America has cheap oil because we use under-handed tactics to move our influence into areas abundant in oil.
Funny how America always has a hand in the "revolution" and "uprisings" in oil rich countries in South America.
If we didn't have cheap oil, then we wouldn't drive big cars, plain and simple.

Europeans CAN drive large cars, they just choose not to. Full size BMW's are as abundant over there as SUVs are here.
The taxes were made by officials that were voted in by the general populace. So it's not the big bad govt. restricting what the people can have. It's the people making choices.
Where as here in America, we vote in people like Bush. Who sign bills that remove environmental protections and ease corporate restrictions. Gee, with people like him in office, I wonder what kind of energy policies are being put in place. They won't be energy conservative. These policies only hurt poor, insignificant guys like you an I.
But, this IS the best country in the world right?
Class divide is a naturally occuring thing right?

For Americans it will always be, bigger, better and faster. Simply because we don't know and better, or more importantly don't CARE. When in Rome right?

If I'm a hypocrite than you are a typical apathetic, ever-justifying, "do it because we can", wasteful blue collar american.

Your apartment is big enough to support an entire Japanese extended family. How decadent to say it isn't large!

Funny how America always thinks it's the most moral, or the most right.

Who says what you choose to drive, has anything to do with what's right or moral? Why do I have to justify what I do or buy to anyone? Guess we should all become some kind of cult that owns nothing, with an allegiance only to our fellow man.

Cheap gasoline is the reason we drive decent size cars, but cheap oil is available to everybody, as TC mentioned already. Feel free to read his post, it's VERY good.

Uh, you bet.

Insignificant guys like me want to drive decent sized vehicles without getting raped by taxes, and herded through these BS emission test stations, or having our cars made so GD complicated by all the emission related crap on board.

Yes, and yes.

Thank God it's a free, non Communist, non Socialist country where I DON'T have to justify my actions to you or anybody else. No, I wouldn't have it any other way!

heh speaking of extended family living in a two bedroom apartment...in India, one of my uncle has a one bedroom apartment, and its pretty small. In that apartment, lives him, his wife, his two daugthers, and his father (my grandpa). When we go to India, we usually stay with them. So then it comes to about 8 people living in a one bedroom flat for 3 weeks or so.

You may gawk at it, but I have a damn good time there. Oh and they don't have any mode of transportation apart from public service.

Ornery: I understand your point. However you should understand that other people live in different situations that could be considered much worse, yet are still happy. You should be lucky and thankful for what you have.

Your lucky cause your probably never had to be in other worse situations.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't take things such as having a comfortable house, a big V8 car, ability to consume at will, etc.. for granted. Cause it all could be taken away from you (or me) at any time.

I guess I look at this way cause I lived in different places where sometimes running water wouldn't be running or electricty would go away periodically for hours.

Hmm...that's probably why I always close the taps tightly, turn off lights when I leave the room, and generally don't waste resources. If everyone consumes without giving a damn, well then you might run out of things to consume.

I have no idea what this has to do with anything though...I just felt like ranting.
