Why do endings to movies suck lately....

Anyone else feel like they're getting ripped off with the endings to good movies. I just watched Collateral, good movie...lousy ending. The best movie I have seen lately is SAW, excellent movie....even better ending.

First time I have really enjoyed an ending in quite some time.

Only thing I wanted different about Collateral's ending was for everyone to DIE. And how the hell did Cruise get pwned through the door and Foxx didn't? Super wacksauce

I was just saying the same thing the other day to my brother-in-law. And I came up with a theory:

<Conspiracy Theory>
It seems like the directors/writers/producers (DWPs) ask themselves: "If I was a viewer watching this movie, what would I want to happen?" and then they go as far away from that as possible. This must be an attempt to win respect of their peers by avoiding the cliche but if this is true then DWPs are concentrating on avoiding a certain ending, instead of trying to create whatever ending is best.
</Conspiracy Theory>

Anyhow, that's my conspiracy theory.

In the mean time I'm getting tired of waiting for good endings to become retro.

Yes, I agree.

My wife keeps bringing home movies from Blockbuster the last couple weekends. Most of them suck, and/or require more than the usual suspension of disbelief.

That said, Big Trouble was good. Based on a Dave Berry novel. Just a comedy, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

EDIT:

And yeah, Collaterals ending=teh poop.

The movie's with good endings are often low budget and not circulated as much... They're out there, you just have to look for them.

Yeah, that movie was different enough that I was hoping for a better ending that the usual.

I know it's a few years old, but American Beauty had one of the best endings I've ever seen.

so they can get your money in dvd rental/sales with "alternate endings"

but really, most of the big budgets do suck.

Se7en had the best ending of all time. Wild Bunch, Heat, and The Last of the Mohicans are all in the running. In Collateral, Fox and Pinkett probably should have died, because he had no background that led you to believe he should have been victorious. But, sometimes, there is the luck factor. Anyways, the ending was good enough imo, probably because I enjoyed the movie as a whole.

But I think in general, most people prefer the happy endings. Movies are fairly corporate these days, so they sink the the lowest common denominator in most instances.

Personally, I liked the ending to Open Water, not at all what I was expecting...

I only liked the ending to that movie because it meant it was over. I liked to boobs at the beginning though. 🙂

What I don't understand about The Last of the Mohicans is why didn't the second to the last of the Mohicans just waitup for his buddies, kill all the bad guys, and live happily ever after with his new white wife? I mean after he dies, the other two just mop up what's left of Magwa and company.

Oh and about collateral, if you watch closely you'll see that Cruise didn't kill Fox because the cardoors were in the path of center mass, where Jamie was just shooting randomly and therefore missed the doors. Pretty cool, I thought.

The same reason remaking old movies is become more popular, and a sequel is nearly expected from a successful movie.

Even creativity has its limits.

I agree. We are in the midst of a serious dry spell right now.

Just saw a preview for Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and it looks really good. Mos Def is good at anything he does. From Big Black Africa to yellow cake, he just rules.

Another thing I hate about movies anymore is the overabundance of "I can't believe the villain was him" twists. You know what I'm talking about. The movies (and there are tons of them) that think they're shocking you by revealing the secret villain as the hero's best friend, or the chief of police, or the victim's own doctor! Wow! What a surprise!

Short Answer:
Hollywood wants to make money. They dont care if people like the movie. If the two coincide, fine. But in the end, they have to make money.

Thats why they kill a lot of TV shows and sequels I would have watched more of.
Not enough profit. I guess I should buy more of the junk I see during the commercial blocks.

Long Answer:
See the 'Conspiracy' speech above.

I wish more producers would take their cues from "Lord Of The Rings"

We already have TONS of good stories in books. Just find a talented director and make movies from them.
Except Shakespeare. We already have too many interpretations of 'Romeo and Juiet'. Most of them suck anyway. The guy wrote a crapload of stories, people. Find something else.

The endings CAN be good, provided they dont deviate too far from the book. Otherwise its just a mess.
