I've had root beer out of a glass bottle, out of a plastic bottle, and a can. While I didn't drink them all together, I don't remember tasting much difference. I think the glass was the best though (better root beer)

Glass is non-reactive with the pop, so it will have the taste that is "original". Glass just does a better job, which is why most chemicals in a chem lab (at least, in the chem labs I've seen, which are admittedly few) are kept in glass containers. The problem for pop is that glass is expensive, heavy, and easily broken.
