why do cops take your monitor when they take your computer?

Every time I see someone's computer being seized on tv, I also see their monitor being taken away?
What purpose does this serve? Obviously the monitor doesn't have any info in it (unless it's an imac).

So what the dealio? It just seems so odd to me.

That is pretty funny, I never even thought about that when I saw it. Unless it was during the commission of a crime, then it is all seized (and later sold).

My guess would be that the police officers may not know much about computers, and the judge who orders the search warrant may not know much about computers either. Therefore to minimize problems they just take everything as evidence just incase they need it to make their case stronger (I'd imagine they would take everything, keyboard, mouse, monitor, modem, printer, whatever computer equipment you may have).

And just incase someone has a weird non-standard monitor connection, there aren't any compatibility problems.

Yeah....they take the monitor because they are idiots. Well maybe not idiots...just not computer literate.

Had a "friend" who had his computer seized by the cops......running Windows 98 and they had to call him for his password...didn't realize that they just needed to click "cancel".

I'd love to see them struggle with my PGP encrypted volume. :D
