Why do cops in some airports walk around with machine guns?

I've seen army with their M16s at an airport, and well before 911 saw swiss security in an airport with sub machine guns and cops in heathrow with them.

That's nucking futs. If you're going to carry a weapon you should be fully prepared to use it (i.e. have a full mag and a round chambered). I've heard from a few buddies of mine that were in Iraq that the Army doesn't keep their weapons chambered over there either.

I'm not sure what airports Skoorb is talking about where they carry machine guns, but at least in the US they only carry SUB-machine guns. I assume that's what he's referring to, because it would be pretty impractical to carry around a machine gun. If they're going for accuracy, they'd carry a rifle. I think it's the scare factor more than anything.

Yup, I, too, thought he was referring to assult rifles such as M16/Ak.
