My wife and I have been holding out for a digital camera that does HD video also and to date the most promising looking combo of the two functions is this camera IMO.

But of course Panasonic says "comes out in April" and everywhere else does also.

I'm hoping to have it in my hands before April 15th if at all possible for a trip we're going, damn you Panasonic, damn you to hell! 🙁

The ZS3 is the same as the TZ7, correct? I've been eagerly waiting for this as well since the CES in January.

I hope you get it before the 15th!

When working with product deliveries, it's difficult (and often foolish) to pin down an exact date. This way if something happens in the distribution chain or there's a firmware bug, they can delay until the end of the month.

It gives them breathing room.

The ZS3 is the update to the TZ5. I have the TZ5 and like it a lot. It records in HD too. I got mine for less than $100 but you can get one around $225. I don't think the ZS3 is worth twice the price.

That type of product release is the kind I always forget about when the item finally becomes available for actual sale.

How is this not obvious. When mass producing a new product to market there is ALWAYS going to be some unforeseen hindrance in getting it out on time. Always.

It's to get the people off their backs who are constantly saying "when is it coming out? when is it coming out? when is it coming out? when is it coming out?" Throw 'em a bone, keep them away for a few months, and if you're a little late, so what?

It's so you don't dead set plan to buy a similar competitors product simply because it comes out earlier.

Its pretty simple, flexibility. If they get it out on the 1st everyone is happy. If they get it out on the 31st they can still pat themselves on the back and pass around huge bonuses because they still made the deadline. In reality, it is stupid and irritates cinsumers. What frustrates me even more is "releasing" a product but you can't actually buy it anywhere for weeks.

Another reason is they have no control over how long it will take from the date they start shipping until it's available for purchase. It's not like video games where they are shipped to stores and tell them to not sell any until the big launch day. A lot of people have to handle it before it gets to a retail outlet.

everything should be sold like video games.
the product shouldnt be "released" until there are several in each store.

That's impractical. It works for video games because the retailers sell a ton of product on the first day so they are willing to deal with it. A retail store that carries 10,000 items isn't going to go to the trouble of keeping an item in stock but keep it off the shelf until a certain day, when it's likely not a single customer will make an effort to be there.

Stores order a product, and whenever it shows up they put it out for sale. Logistics prohibit anything more complex than that unless it's a product people will line up for.
