Why do clothes from Banana Republic cost so much when you can find the same thing at Old Navy for 3 times cheaper? Do people not know that they are made from the same place?

people don't care, they pay for the label

they want people to know how rich and important they are

Indeed.

I don't have any BR stuff but some little stores and other brands do really nice t shirts that I don't mind paying more for. Not £50 each but £25 is fine with some friends working in the store giving me a good discount. The ah heck is that they are strictly hand wash t shirts!

You can't find the same thing at Old Navy for 3 times cheaper. You can find something similar at Old Navy, but not the same thing.

You might as well ask why you would buy a Ferrari when you can get a Corvette for 3x cheaper. They're both sports cars -- they're the same thing, right?

To be fair, they don't offer nearly anything similar at Old Navy save for jeans and shirts.

That being said I don't shop there often but every piece of clothing (a few shirts, coat) I have from BR has lasted years and years, you can't say the same for Old Navy.

I prefer the gap because they always have sales and their jeans are the only ones I like aside from Structure.

I had a cousin who used to work at a chain shoe store (such as Footlocker) and he was often telling me stories about people coming in and asking whats the most popular shoe and he would then direct that person to what he thought they could afford (he was on commission) and that was usually a $130-$180 sneaker. However sometimes a person would outright ask for the most expensive sneakers they had (I think it was $230, this was at least two years ago).

The funny thing is, a lot of the clothes that cost $80 for a shirt and so will eventually all go on sale, my closet is made up of those clothes once they hit the 60-80% off racks. (Dockers, Polo, Structure etc.)

Goes to show you what people will do for looks. Tho its not as bad as what people are willing to pay for the looks of a car.

Personally, I'll keep my money and not give a flip what anybody else thinks.

3 stores within the same company, 3 lines of clothing. Are you saying the Honda Civic is the same as the Acura RL?

I shop at Banana Republic at times. I've never gotten compliments from any of my clothes in my life - UNTIL I bought a shirt at Banana Republic. Then I tried 3 more shirts and a pair of jeans. Each one got me compliments from many people (even girls I was trying to hit on).

Note: I'm a cheapskate. I'd never pay $30+ for a shirt. You can get Banana Republic shirts in the $15-$25 range on their cheap rack. That really isn't that expensive. Old Navy is what? $10-$20 for a shirt?

That is the nice part of Banana Republic: No visible label.

I once casually dated this girl who insisted we go to BR one day and gave me like $500 worth of clothes and told me to get it all, lol

I buy what I like, and personally couldn't care less who made it. That said, BR's quality far surprasses most of what GAP produces, and absolutely all of Old Navy. Also, GAP and Old Navy seem to want a more youthful demographic; BR actually has clothes that professional adults can wear and not look like they're still in high school.

The fact that they're all owned by the same company means very little. Most every high-quality manufacturer has a subsidiary that produces lower-quality products for a different demographic.

So long as you stay away from stores like Gucci, Versace, etc. you likely get what you pay for. I refuse to buy clothes that prominently display labels, no matter what I pay for them.

Fun fact: BR has outlets and clearances that are often cheaper than Gap. Not everyone pays a lot for their mid-range clothes. I don't think I've ever spent more than $25 on a single item at BR.

Because the banana Republic is hidden deep in a jungle on the other side of the world. UPS charges enormous shipping fees for delivery to your local mall.

Quality of material for one, but like others I wait for big sale or some outlet etc. I can't see myself paying for BR's regular prices.

Yes. They have no way to support their military other than their chain of clothing stores in the West.

Even though I shop there, I'm not delusional enough to think the quality is better. Just the cut is better. More $$$ in clothing rarely if ever means more quality.
