why do clocks have to be reset every time there is a power outage?

it would seem to me that a cheap capacitor would keep it going on those times the power blinks instead I always have about ten clocks to set each and every time the power goes off

...because they lose power. 😕

Some clocks have a battery backup. Other clocks run on batteries. Buy one (or ten) of those.

9V battery ftw? My alarm clock doesn't even need a 9VB battery, I assume it has an internal Li-On battery or something.
 
I do have batteries in the ones that use it,still there are some clocks in appliances that do not allow batteries
 
I've always used AA powered alarm clocks. I have yet to have one lose the time when there is an outage in the AC mains. 😛

I had an AA powered alarm clock for YEARS..and I don't recall ever replacing the batteries. Maybe..once?
 
My $10 Big Lots RCA alarm clock (which is loud as fucking hell, 😀) has a 9V backup battery. Last Fall semester (Fall 07), there was a car accident about two miles from my apartment that knocked out power to all of Fletcher Ave., including my apartment and the university. I had my alarm set to 12 PM for a 2 PM class, and I woke up to a very faint beeping. I notice the power's out (computer died), and I look at the alarm clock and the screen is completely off, but it's just making this tiny squeak in hopes that I'll get up. Walked over, hit off, and I think I kissed it. That thing saved my ass.

My Motorola V600's battery died once while I was asleep, and I was using it to wake up for class. It powered back up, just long enough to blast my alarm ringtone, then it died.

I have two phones and an alarm clock set for the AM. I'm pretty sure I've shut an alarm off and not even remembered it..after I woke up a while later.. 😱

This time, one is on the other side of the room so I should be ok. 😛
 
My alarm clock has a 9V battery backup. The power has gone out several times and the display on it goes off, but it has never "forgotten" what time it was, and even woke me up while the power was out once. I've never replaced the battery.
 
My alarm has a watch battery in it. Everything shuts off, but it maintains settings and the time while the power is out.

I think they want to keep from being replaced. The phone hasn't been so lucky, the alarm clock has; every time I consider a stupid iPod alarm I'm reminded how freakin' loud this one is.
 
We have an alarm clock that is able to set the time through the power lines. That is a great feature, it's too bad all appliances don't do that.

I am not young anymore so I can't handle it but about 10 years ago, I was used to 4hr of sleep. Of course it's very deep sleep, people could have robbed me blind and I wouldn't know.

Alarm is the backup, in case I have one of those days when I am exhausted and can't get up on my own.

Now I get 5.5 hours on weeknights and take 2-3 hr naps on weekends
