Why do Christians insist on capitalizing pronouns?

"Him" and "he" are not proper nouns! Capitalizing them is not proper English!

It annoys me.

Please don't take this thread too seriously.

i think it depends on the context you are using the word in. you should capitalize it if you are referring to that as someones name

I've never heard of anyone named Him or He. If you're talking about Bob's car, you write "That Honda is his car", not "That Honda is His car".

My grammar books in school always said to capitalize "He" and "Him" when referring to the Lord/God/whatever... if they capitalize it for anything else you're correct it's not proper.

<< dont they put him and he capatilized because "him" and "he" is referring to god? (notice that i didnt capitalize anything 😛) >>

True, but I don't care if it's Bob's Honda or God's Honda, you still don't capitalize pronouns!

It is a function of what is in the Bible. Him and He are capitalized because they refer to God. It is just one of those things. Don't get pissy because it isn't proper english, just accept it.

Here comes another athiest trying to FORCE his beliefs on us. Hmmm.. Wonder what would happen if a Christian would come in here and start trying to tell people how to write???

Must be nice to have double standards, eh notfred?

I can't quite visualize God in a Honda... pics?

Simple fact of the matter is that people have been capitalizing He and Him when referring to a deity (specifically but NOT exclusively for the Christian God) since before there were formalized grammar rules. THUS, capitalizing He and Him for a deity is an exception to the rule, just as there are MANY MANY other exceptions to rules in the English language (I before E EXCEPT after C; how come you're not in here bitching about that?). So, it's built into the system and not not "proper English". So get over it.

By the by, I'm an agnostic (not that it matters, but I don't feel like getting wrapped up in a flamefest).

I'm an athiest who was brought up catholic, and I only remember the word "Him" being capitalized when it was referring to god. You act like they do it with every word. It's done out of respect for their god, who cares anyhow? It shouldn't affect you unless you read the bible on a regular basis, and if you are not Christian, why would you?

As it has been pointed out, if Bob happens to be the Lord Almighty, then you would say "That Honda is His car", but I happen to know that God rides a Ducati.

Because there are a LOT of exceptions to that exception; it only works when you're a little kid 😛

It's all out of respect for God. Why do you care, anyway?

True. So there are exceptions to the exception. I figure he should be in here getting apolplectic about it. 😀
