Why do CD-Rs sometimes not read?

When I am backing up my files, I don't close the disk until it's full. Sometimes when I put the unfinished disk in the burner, it does not work. Sometimes it does. I am using an Acer 4x4x32, Memorex CD-Rs, and Adaptec software.
