Why do Cable Modems produce so much booty-heat???

I just bought a router, and all the heat from my cable modem fried the router...i had them all together, and that is all I can think that went wrong, it was working, i went out, left something downloading, I came back, everything had disc (aol, Ie, ICQ) and the router wouldn't start up.

Luckily I exchanged it, but I t must have been the Toshiba modem...im gonna get that thing as far away from my Hercules GTXP breakout box as possible...

I just dont understand why the modem gets so hot...if i could i would stick a fan on it, but i have to eventually give it back.

Early Cisco 675 routers had the same problem, they ran pretty damned hot & would occasionally burn out. Keep it in a well ventilated area (in otherwords don't drop it behind your desk or something dumb like that), & you should be OK. Or, drop it in a tub of mineral oil.

The solution?

I have 4 different boxes in my "network"... A cable modem (it's for wireless server, just is like a cable modem and it gets hot) a linksys router, a 5 port netgear switch, and an HP print server...

Now, how to I keep these items cool when they're all together? Get some styrofoam, cut it into little cubes or something, and put a space between your router and modem...

I do this for my switch/router... The router is on top, but has a space inbetween thanks to the styrofoam.. make sure the styrofoam doesn't block any vent holes... and then the heat can escape...

Anyways, thats just the way I do it (the router is on top of my modem, but it has legs, so it's higher up, and gets air in there...

the print server is in front of all this, so it's not causing any heat, but it is difficult to hook it up that way...

yeam my linksys switch has legs, and sits on the herc GTXP breakout box, so hopefully those are ok. the cable modem is now isolated, but the styrofoam is a good idea.

That's good to know I never knew that, glad my Cisco 675 doesn't over heat.
