I remember my cousin, who grew up there, telling me that any kid that had braces was constantly ragged on. I wouldnt want braces if that was the case.

*tap tap* is this sarcasm detector still working? I can't tell if you actually believe kids in the US don't constantly tease people with braces or not. *tap tap*. Hmm.... time to take this thing into the shop.

i had braces when i was a kid, twice actually, onec in like 5th grade and again in 7th, i dont recall being teased :/

Where did you grow up? Where I grew up, kids tease each other over EVERYTHING. Definitely braces or any other dental work.

So is this stereotype actually true? I'd like to see some hard evidence to support it.

It's based on reality, but it's becoming outdated as they're pushing basic dental hygiene. The stereotype will live on for a bit.

The Adult Dental Health Survey, published by the Office for National Statistics, found that 13% of adults were without a single natural tooth in 1998.

This compares to 21% in 1988, and 30% in 1978.

Britons floss teeth with screwdrivers

British using pliers to pull their own teeth

50% of 5 year olds have decayed or rotten teeth

30% of Scots share a toothbrush

because other countries are not as superfacial as the US. I have never seem so many kids with braces until I came to the USA.

What does wanting to have healthy teeth have to do with superficiality? I know many Germans folks (old now) who kept telling me when I had braces how they had braces in the 1920's and 30's. So it's not just the United States.

Because in most countries people don't give a crap. I know I have bad teeth, most people in Canada don't really care how they look. /crooked teeth smile

I know most Americans don't believe it, but it is possible to use perfect dental hygiene and still get bad teeth. There is a significant genetic factor involved.

funny that they don't have enough dentists... that's the #1 salaried job here, isn't it? Or at least among the medical professions.

BTW, I have to disagree about Top Gear... I've seen _numerous_ audience members with bad teeth.

Americans also have bad teeth. I've seen them on TV and IRL. What does that prove?
That you're British ?

You know how stereotypes start... I'm not one to propogate it but if someone asks a question (as in this thread), I'm giving my feedback. It doesn't "prove" anything.

And the factor for boys, the Darwin award effect 😀

Chuck Norris went to Britian once, the Queen didn't bow for him.

The resulting roundhouse busted everyone's grill in the country and even their unborn decendants.

misaligned teeth can lead to problems down the road, and that's basically what it comes down to. i have had braces for 2.5years now and am looking forward to getting them off very much 🙂
