Why do British people have bad teeth?

I'm just saying. Every person I encounter, 80% of the time they have eeekky yellow teeth. I'm not hating British people, but I'm telling the truth lol D:

Also, why Americans obsessed with perfect teeth. Why can't the British follow? I don't understand. Bad teeth is bad. Also, it's not expensive getting your teeth whiten. ALSO they have free health care.. wtf.

Funny, I study Dentistry at Uni and I'm really shocked that most of my coursemate have bad teeth too lol.

Just saying.

Btw I'm not British, I'm from Sweden and living in the UK to study.

They may have "free" health care but dental usually isn't covered under universal insurance. At least it's not here in Canada. Most likely not in the UK either.

Bad teeth is probably due a bit to genetics, hard water, who knows. Brits do tend to have bad teeth so it must either be a cultural or environmental thing. My grandma lost all hers in her 20s due to a gum disease, and has worn false teeth ever since. Said it was drinking from dirty cups during the war.

I find you also tend to see a lot of Japanese people with really crooked teeth.

There are probably many factors.
some of them might be:
Hollywood/cosmetic surgery
business/service industry -> smiles are important
braces -> lots of people get braces
credit -> lots of people can get braces

japanese people tend to be smaller stature. smaller jaw areas -> more cluttering -> crooked mushed up teeth.

edit: Also it could be smoking, but smoking is pretty prevalent throughout the UK (at least when I last went there). That's one of my least favorite things about Europe.

I think I read somewhere they don't brush their teeth much. I think their smoking is on par with the US, but don't feel lik4 searching on my tablet.

Not sure what you mean by bad teeth. If you mean discolouration, a lot of other factors go into tooth colour, not just hygiene. Not sure what effect just having white teeth does for dental hygiene.

I don't know about in the UK, but here in New Zealand dental and optometry aren't covered, which is a bit strange given the impact of dental hygiene to health.

believe it or not, genetics does play a small part in how well teeth hold up and how they look. Aside from that, good and bad oral care habits are also usually inherited.
