Why do Bostonians pronounce 'R' funny?

I dated a girl that grew up in Charlestown. When she moved to DC to go to school, she was so self-conscious about her HEAVY blue-collar Boston accent that she got rid of it - FAST. She would occasionally drop a couple of words in Bostonese and it was hilarious, just because I wasn't used to hearing it out of her.

Her family was pretty amusing too.

I've lived around both, and even though the vast majority of my family has a Bostonian accent...I can say assuredly that I'd much rather meet a woman with a southern accent. Some of the girls at UGA were just too damn cute with that little bit of drawl going on.

When I first came to Boston I couldn't even understand what half the people were saying and sometimes I still can't understand my apartment's security guard because he has such a thick Boston accent. They just cut off entire syllables and slur their words. Burlington sounds like Buhton, Peabody sounds like pehbudy, Aquarium sounds like aquaum (or something!), etc.

It's worse than a Southern accent.

we do it for efficiency, it allows us to have full conversations while flipping people off while in traffic.

Actually, this reminds me, I went to NY City for a business trip, and it took me about 20 minutes to register.

There's a R in my last name.

The place was packed and it was very embarrasing. My NYC coworker, who had taken me to the hotel couldn't stop laughing at me, and of course spread the story back to headquarters in Boston.

We don't all sound like that heh. The accent is thicker the closer you get to the larger cities, but once you start leaving them, it starts to thin out. I'd say one of the few words that will always stick out though, is aunt.

Also, about southern accents. I'd say it depends on where. But, most importantly, southern accents on chicks rocks
