NPR had a segment a few months ago about black children and their lack of swimming ability.
They said that it is a real issue, especially with all of the teenage deaths lately.
They said it was mainly due to the black culture, not liking to swim and not teaching their children to swim.
They even said it went back to the 40s, 50s, 60s, when public pools were only in rich areas and most blacks lived in cities, so there weren't public rivers, ponds, lakes around to swim in.
