Waitresses/waiters need to stop whining about tips all the time. They already make too much anyways.
If you've ever asked a few how much they make, they actually average around $30-40/hr after tips.
That's ridiculously much for someone delivering food. People with bachelors out of college barely get that much.

What? You've been misinformed. I think about 10 yrs ago I was making about 10-15$/hr before taxes. Try waiting tables and see how much you make--if you can actually serve people without getting all pissy, that is.

Depends on where you work too. If you work in a hole in a wall place, then yeah, $10-15/hr. But if you work at some bigger name place like olive garden, black angus, etc, you would easily make $30/hr+

Additionally, the places that deserve the least tip are the asian restaurants. Worst service ever. They aren't friendly, don't really talk to you except to take your order, doesn't come over to ask for anything. Definitely doesn't deserve the standard tip.
So if you work in one of those places, don't expect to get the $30/hr tip like other restaurants that actually provide service.

waitresses' income COMES FROM TIPS. my sisters worked at Ruby Tuesday's, where their hourly wage was $2.30.... please tell me how you'd live off of that wage without tips, so quit saying waitresses make too much, blah blah blah

Um you think I don't know that?
$30/hr income is AFTER TIPS. And that is too much for someone delivering food.
I'm not saying that they don't deserve tips AT ALL. I'm saying they shouldn't deserve as much as they get.
If you can't make a living off $10/hr, maybe you should've looked for a higher caliber job? Maybe worked harder in school or something?
Do you tip people at mc donald's making $5/hr that try to make a living off of it? Don't think so.

Sorry, that's just not true. My fiancee ( or 2 dozen other workers in that restaraunt)wouldn't qualify for nearly all the state welfare programs if that was the case.

Regardless, this is not the point of my post. Which was more of a how in the hell did these people think it was acceptable to stiff her....

They do here in southern california.
But I agree that it's unacceptable to stiff a waitress/waitor - even for the asian restaurants I've mentioned.

Haha. I'm not racist if that's what you are trying to imply. And white people do not always tip. But in being around her and her co-workers, when whites don't tip, it's generally because there was a food or service problem.

I hate to say it, but you are being racist (not that you are a racist).

Now if you had started by saying "It has been my experience..." then I could understand, but blanket statements are never correct.

(It would be the same as a black person saying that all white people are privileged and have no hardships in life)

Cheap people come in every race, gender, and size.

Now kindly STFU unless your talking about cheap people as a whole.

Look, black people DO tip much less than other races. That's not debatable. My title was based upon the experience of my fiancee tonight.

Thats a racist article....:p

Sorry your SO had such trashy people at her table, I worked in the tipping industry long enough to feel her pain. People like them (bad tippers, i.e. black/white/brown/yellow trash) usually dont prosper well in life, so the best revenge is living well.
:)

*edited for idiots like biggie to understand that i was talking about bad tippers, not black people*

If they make $2.30 an hour, tip them like $7.00/hour so that they are on par with other service workers.

LOL, servers at Olive Garden do not make $30 a hour. You have to remember a servers shift is from like 4pm-11pm. They might be busy from like 6pm-9pm and they might make $30 a hour for that 3 hour stretch between 6pm-9pm but probably only on a really busy night and then they have to average all the slow hours in. Also they have to tip out a considerable amount of their tips to support staff like bussers/bartenders/foodrunners/hostesses.

Hah! I'd like to know where you are getting those numbers from. Maybe in a fine restaraunt on a prime shift in a prime location. No, most do not average that much. And the summer Saturday night shifts in the smoking section where a typical waitress might pull in $150 over 7 hours does not balance out the rest of their shifts. Many, many times servers here will go home with $25 or less.

Just considering how many tables/tips per hour makes you realize that in order to make 35$/hr, you'd have to sell about 250$ worth of food an hour (at 15%). Unless you're working at some high-class place, that's going to be turning over 5 tables an hour with each tipping you 7$. That would be REALLY good money if you could work that fast and provide good service.
