It's acceptable because a tip is a bonus. She isn't entitled to it and she shouldn't be expecting a tip. She's doing her job and earning her wage.

No, she is not entitled to it. You're right. But in this country tips are expected. Server wage structures are designed so that servers make money from tips, not wages. Yes, they will make min. wage regardless of what tips they pull in, but they still have to report a set percentage of their tips to the government for wage withholdings.

Haha. I'm not racist if that's what you are trying to imply. And white people do not always tip. But in being around her and her co-workers, when whites don't tip, it's generally because there was a food or service problem.

I hate to say it, but you are being racist (not that you are a racist).

Now if you had started by saying "It has been my experience..." then I could understand, but blanket statements are never correct.

(It would be the same as a black person saying that all white people are privileged and have no hardships in life)

Cheap people come in every race, gender, and size.

Now kindly STFU unless your talking about cheap people as a whole.

Asians and Indians suck at tipping too.

The indians and asians in this area very often work corporate for a local fortune 500 company, and seem to tip well, so I don't know whether that's true or not.

I don't really think lack of money has much to do with it. At least not according to her.

1st generation asians probably don't tip well because they don't tip in Asia. They have added gratuities at restaurants.

I like that system better. Tipping is supposed to be a bonus for good effort, but it has become a expected necessity here. I get looks sometmies if I don't tip 20%..

Lucky, see the pizza tip thread. These go hand in hand. Then make sure you don't make statements like "I'm not a racist, BUT..."

Bad tips and no tips are part of waiting tables

If it makes you feel any better I have a story much worse than your girlfriends

In my state, hourly wage is $2.13 a hour and tips.

I had a $550 table. I had to tip out 5% of $550 to bussers/food runners/bartender, so that was around $25 out of my pocket. Table left me $0 on $550, so I had to pay $25 to wait on them. At least I got my $2.13 a hour LOL.

Anthony: That waitress sized us up in two seconds. We're black and black people don't tip. So she wasn't gonna waste her time. Now somebody like that? Nothing you can do to change their mind.
Peter: So, uh... how much did you leave?
Anthony: You expect me to pay for that kind of service?

I was a waiter (aka "server") for a while in the South (AL)--tis true the black folks don't tend to tip well (at least there). There were exceptions, but for the most part if I got anything it was like one or two dollars. Also, they tended to be the most demanding/consuming of my time and very picky about the food. I'm not sure why they don't tip, but it might have something to do with sticking it to whitey--not that your white waiter really qualifies as "whitey".

You sir are being kinda racist. As if all white/asian/etc people give tips everytime. Your fiance just happened to have a bad table. Not all black people don't tip. Maybe she did something that offended them. Maybe they thought the food was terrible. Etc Etc.

Possible, but (based on experiences that I've listened to) blacks are pretty vocal about bad service. Not a one of them complained.

I'm not racist but I used to work in a restaurant 10 years ago and it's true that for the most part African Americans do not tip well. Depends on what type of people they are. Honestly the corporate types usually tip well. The types that listen to rap music and such do not (Baggy clothes, large amounts of jewelry, big hoop earrings, etc). Once again, i'm not stereotyping or being racist but this is the experience that I encountered back then.

As for Asians, I am one and my family has always tipped well if service was good. If it was average we tipped accordingly. If horrible, good luck getting 10 percent.

I don't feel a tip should ever be expected. I think you should only ever expect to see your wage. If you know that a server makes minimum wage, you accept that that's what you're going to make and anything extra is simply an unexpected, unaccounted for bonus. IMHO.

Awesome. And I guess the Asian culture gave us laundromats and Indians gave us curry smell? "AMD Forever" indeed :disgust:

I used to work at a dine in fast food restaurant. One time this big black family came in. They were very needy (required extra service). Then when they left, they left all of their stuff on the table and a big mess to boot.

Look, black people DO tip much less than other races. That's not debatable. My title was based upon the experience of my fiancee tonight.

Waitresses/waiters need to stop whining about tips all the time. They already make too much anyways.
If you've ever asked a few how much they make, they actually average around $30-40/hr after tips.
That's ridiculously much for someone delivering food. People with bachelors out of college barely get that much.

However, you're forgetting they have no benefits, 401k, paid sick time, or vacation time.

All this said, I usually tip quite well. The people are out trying to make a living, and if they make me feel like my trip to their place was worth my time, I'm more than happy to give to the server.

What? You've been misinformed. I think about 10 yrs ago I was making about 10-15$/hr before taxes. Try waiting tables and see how much you make--if you can actually serve people without getting all pissy, that is.

Hah! I'd like to know where you are getting those numbers from. Maybe in a fine restaraunt on a prime shift in a prime location. No, most do not average that much. And the summer Saturday night shifts in the smoking section where a typical waitress might pull in $150 over 7 hours does not balance out the rest of their shifts. Many, many times servers here will go home with $25 or less.

waitresses' income COMES FROM TIPS. my sisters worked at Ruby Tuesday's, where their hourly wage was $2.30.... please tell me how you'd live off of that wage without tips, so quit saying waitresses make too much, blah blah blah
