Why do black folks have such a distrust for the police and white folks?

Because for 2,000 years, the white man has oppressed the black man. That and they need a scapegoat for their problems.

no. It's because of stereotypes. Stereotypes aren't, however, created for no reason.

QFT.

Popular media (Chappelle's Show being a perfect example) doesn't exactly help matters either. While I do find it funny - if you took away all the "cops + Whitey going after black people" jokes, there'd be nothing left but 3 minutes of monologue and 8 minutes of commercials.

Translated into grammatically correct English, I think armatron means that sterotypes are formed due to general truths. These generalizations are not true to the entire population, but instead, are more pronounced in a given population.

"All male figure skaters are gay." - That isn't true, but there is a high percentage that are.
"All black people hate the cops and white people." - Same as above.

Wrong. Its only since Columbus's time that the white man has oppressed the black man.

Historically speaking though, the law was never on the side blacks even when they were the victims. For example, the case of Emett Till.

Open your eyes. You can't hide behind alcohol, you know. The world isn't some fairy land where everything is harmonious.

Ya, if it were 2,000 years ago, there'd be black people in the bible. So what I'm trying to say is that god has distrust for the black man as well.

Oh sh!t, did I just bring religion into a race discussion thread? Just doing my part. ;)

Not if you work a minimum wage job to rent a $200 apartment and pay $15 a month to play WoW!

Including the stereotype that many black males are criminals.

Is that not at least partly true? Here in Minneapolis the inner city schools spend more per student than many schools in the suburbs but have a lower graduation rate. It's not like we're not giving inner city kids the opportunity to become educated. They'd just prefer not to be.

I never had to deal with drug dealers and gangstas waiting outside my classroom to shoot me when class was over.

Add total amount of money spent on child by their parents to all figures and come back to me with an answer.

Maybe percentage of disposable income would be a better comparison?

This is true. However, things are different now (for the most part). Of course, there are certainly some isolated cases of racist cops/judges/etc unfairly pinning crimes on blacks today. But these instances are few and far between, although there's obviously no way to get real "hard numbers" on this kind of thing happening.

With the way the issue is portrayed in media, you'd think that white people are getting away with every crime they commit, where black people are jumped, beaten, and thrown in jail for walking down the street. It's done in a joking way, but that kind of thing works on a subconscious level in terms of how people perceive it IRL.

Do you think those dealers and gangsters are white? So tell me what race is oppressing blacks?

I think it has a lot to do with the perception that blue collar crimes receive harsher punishment when compared to white collar crimes, e.g. Martha Stewart, Enron executives, etc.
