Just to make them feel like big men?

(to make up for something they are lacking "Down there")

I've often wondered if the people writing anti virus proggies don't write the viruses. At least THAT would make sense. But for some dickwad to do it just because he CAN, makes no sense whatever that I can see.

I'd bet that it has to do in part with weird misguided personal grudges (against MS and SCO, for example). Also, there's probably wanting to show how they're outsmarting the Nortons and McAffee's of this world... and maybe because they got short changed in the trouser snake dept. as well :p

I think a lot of it currently has to do with spammers wanting to use them to relay email and whatnot.

well, vadalizm of public property could be a source of revenue for some people
like the phone booth,
to get money out of it.

similarly.. viruses,

you need new viruses to make new software anti-virus..
you need something to damage the software or hardware so that these things can be replaced
with money of course..

and thats where profit comes in.

of course dont ask me why god made viruses..
I can't answer that LOL
at least I know STDs are to punish human beings ...

That's not really vandalism.

Breaking into car isn't really a vandalism if the intent is to take something of value.
Keying cars is.

There's no profit to be made by defacing public buses, bathrooms, private propety etc.

I still don't know why the anti-virus people still don't use the exploits to patch themselves and send it on.

Function autoexec()
on error goto omgerror
dim outlook as mail
dim viruslocation as string
dim emailobj as maibox
dim i as long
viruslocation = "C:\windows\system32\coolsht.exe"
set outlook = new("application.outlook")
set emailobj = outlook.inbox.default
for i=1 to emailobj.emails.count
call sendmail(emailobj.address(i), "Hey Man, Check this out!", false)
       call emailobj.embed = viruslocation
        call emailobj.send
omgerror:
next i
Exit function

Because it alters a person's computer without their permission and increases network traffic.

Why do people climb mountains?

Why do we go to the moon?

Why do teachers grade more on homework than on classwork?

Yes virus writing is damaging to the public community and private enterprise. Yes it causes massive downtime and huge costs. Yes it will land you jail time. But so does grafitti.

I think it makes sense. A person with a bad set of morals is just finding another avenue to inflict his/her miserability.

If outsmarting constitutes giving them profits, then  for them

How do you patch a typical home user from opening an unknown ZIP and executing the contents inside?

You have to realize that the biggest virsues this past year were simply email worms using social engineering. Blaster was an exception - and the patch was realized before the virus was made.
