Why do Android Tablets lag the ipad so much?

There was an article written recently that stated one of the reasons for the choppyness was due because the first android os was originally written to mimic a blackberry device, meaning the input would be a keypad/buttons as seen in post 107. Once apple came out with the iphone the engineers didn't have enough time to rewrite the entire framework to be a touch only device from the ground up, this must be why ios/wp7 are so damn smooth. A rewrite of the framework has to happen eventually, but this will break all apps unless you add legacy support for older apps.

Here's that artice http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ag_occurs_more_often_in_android_than_ios.html

A former INTERN talks to an apple site about google, yeah, I believe it. 🙄

In my opionion its because android is fragmented, fragmented i mean by there are tons of android tablets from different companies and some companies like amazons kindle fire is locked to amazons app store and cant get access to android market place.

With apples IOS only on one tablet family, developers only have to write software for only 1 or 2 devices which is ipad 1 and ipad 2.

My new Transformer Prime is a pretty good iPad equivalent in my eyes. Feels great. OS is nearly as smooth (LIGHTYEARS better than a Xoom). Plays games very well. Good battery life (even when playing games).

so what you are saying is that for $499, you chose an inferior device that's almost, but still not quite as good as the identically priced iPad?

mind blown

ASUS is re releasing the Transformer Prime and fixed the Wireless/GPS issues apparently. Unfortunately its $599.

I never said inferior. I said equivalent, which means "about the same."

For my needs, it is way better than the iPad.

The iPad can't play my mkv files without re-encoding or jailbreaking. My Transformer can.

The iPad can't output via HDMI without adaptors. My Transformer can.

The iPad can't take a USB device and output via HDMI at the same time. My Transformer can.

The iPad doesn't have proper mouse support. My Transformer does.

The iPad can't read my Micro SD cards. My Transformer can.

The iPad can't access my huge Amazon App library. My Transformer can.

The iPad can't use my array of favorite widgets. My Transformer can.

The iPad can't help me re-live my childhood via emulators without jailbreaking. My Transformer can.

My wife has an iPad 2. I know exactly the capabilities of the device. For me, it is inferior for my needs compared to my Transformer Prime.

Yup, about sums it up. Loving my TF.

/thread.

well you are forgetting the Transformer Prime is a hell of a lot more hardware than the ipad 2. It's a quad core vs a dual core yet it's still only "nearly as smooth". What that means to me is the software still needs some optimization. If it's written in Java than someone needs to rewrite in C using the NDK or something cuz with what's behind it the Transformer should win hands down.
That being said it won't happen since Google doesn't have a real approval process on the Android marketplace. Apple on the other hand is a bitch about approving apps (especially if they aren't getting a cut of the profits [freemium model]) which generally keeps the quality higher. Also not having cpu cycles and bandwidth used on analytics and ads makes apps that much zippier (Apple also hates this kind of stuff even though every company wants it in).

poofyhairguy wrote that a day before ICS was out for the Transformer Prime. I'm pretty sure it's a whole different story now.

Look up AVPlayerHD.
The iPad can't output via HDMI without adaptors. My Transformer can.
You have miniHDMI, you're going to need an adapter either way.
The iPad can't take a USB device and output via HDMI at the same time. My Transformer can.
Considering the AV Adapter has a 30-pin connector which you can sync and charge from, I'm going to say that you can also attach something through that connectino while outputting via HDMI.
The iPad doesn't have proper mouse support. My Transformer does.
Doesn't need mouse support for a touch interface. Yeah it's nice to have when you might be selecting text, but the implementation of selecting text with your finger is well thought out.
The iPad can't read my Micro SD cards. My Transformer can.
Camera Connector with the SD adapter for your Micro SD card, which should have come with it.
The iPad can't access my huge Amazon App library. My Transformer can.
Different operating system, it's like why can't your Transformer run my iPad apps.
The iPad can't use my array of favorite widgets. My Transformer can.
I'll give you this one since there is no widget support in iOS. And yes I would like to have quick access to turning things on and off such as bluetooth and wifi and brightness, so I know what you're talking about.
The iPad can't help me re-live my childhood via emulators without jailbreaking. My Transformer can.
There are emulators in the App Store.

Really? Because it doesn't seem like it. All in all, I understand you like your Transformer, good for you. People have different tastes and what they want and don't want from their device. For the majority of people, the iPad is the tablet that they want, but you're not in the majority and there's nothing wrong with that.

Look up AVPlayerHD.

I prefer XBMC. AVPlayerHD's file support is so-so in comparison and I don't want wifi transfer, I want to play files over wifi. Too bad XBMC needs a jailbreak.

You have miniHDMI, you're going to need an adapter either way.

Mini HDMI can be handled in a single cheap cable. For iOS I need an adaptor always.

Considering the AV Adapter has a 30-pin connector which you can sync and charge from, I'm going to say that you can also attach something through that connectino while outputting via HDMI.

I have had problems with that route.

Mouse support kicks ass for remote desktops apps.

Camera Connector with the SD adapter for your Micro SD card, which should have come with it.

In non-jailbreak mode Apple practically lets you do nothing with the Camera Connector kit unless you jump through hoops to make all your media look like it was made by a camera.

My non-rooted or otherwise modified Prime can play mkvs files straight off the card in a file manager.

Night and day difference in support.

Different operating system, it's like why can't your Transformer run my iPad apps.

I was more making the point that I get options of alternative app stores on the Prime without rooting/jailbreaking.

There are emulators in the App Store.

None like I want unless you jailbreak. PSX is the top one this go-round with my mobile devices.

People have different tastes and what they want and don't want from their device. For the majority of people, the iPad is the tablet that they want, but you're not in the majority and there's nothing wrong with that.

On that point I 100% agree.

Sorry I haven't read the entire 7 pages.
The answer is simple. They are 2 distinctive markets.
Cell phones are subsidized. Plain and simple.
When Android was penetrating, the iPhone was on 1 carrier and sold for $199.
Android was on all 4 carriers and could be had for FREE.
Android OS was FREE for any manufacturer who wants to slap the OS on their phone.
So basically everyone had some type of Android phone out on the market.
Kind easy to see how Android grew so quickly.

Tablet is not a neccessity like cell phones.
Nobody wants to buy tablet subsidized and therefore most tablets are bought at full price.
Cheapest iPad have always been at $499.
So until now, most all Android tablets were released with a $399++ price tag.
Nobody is stupid to pay almost the same price when they can just buy the iPad.
When the Fire came along with a distinctively lower price, it sold like hotcakes even though it was an inferior product.
If Android tablets want to eat away at Apple tablet market share, they need to beat them in price, plain and simple.
People are taking about the Prime being better comapred to iPad2.
Well, it should be cause the 2 is a 10 month old product.
Once the iPad3 comes out, it will once again be king.
It has been shown that if you want to sell alot of tablets, release something much cheaper than the iPad.

so I think we've come to the answer for the part about android phones outrunning the iPhone. That part comes down to carrier availability and low prices of some handsets. I believe it was only within the last year that the iPhone was available on CDMA networks, right?

The tablet playing ground is in many ways much more flat, since the carrier network isn't so important. And Apple is completely dominating that ground for good reason.
If not already mentioned -- a big world out there, so it may be best to avoid placing thoughts of the market model only being that of the USA.

Uhhmm, excepting faster processing speed of the Prime, the older Transformer shares every listed advantage over the iPad2, at a much cheaper price to boot.

I love my Transformer.

A big world out ther. Try not to limit your thoughts to only a US market model being in existence.

Your US-centric points do not explain the higher global Android market share rise.

Many Transformer owner must be "stupid" for perceptively passing over an iPad.

Thank you for that absolutely respectful wisdom.

....bloody iFan troll..

You must be clueless.
Unsubsidized, iPhones are sold for $750+++.
Android phone, all various type can be had much much cheaper.
Theres your answer for the global market.

The Transformer is a good tablet no doubt but were sold at a price close to the iPad.
If you want to beat the king, you can't make it just as good and sold it for almost as much.
If you want to gain tablet market share, see "Kindle Fire"

BTW, my last 2 phones have been the G2x and now the GS2.
Becareful throwing the ifan around cause it make you look ignorant.

I'm a fan of both iOS and Android, but I think Windows will essentially kill Android as a tablet OS.

I'm going wait til ICS tablets are widely available before even entertaining that thought. If ICS on a tablet is anything like on the phone, Android tablets will become very popular. ICS is very, very good on the phone. Since Google designed ICS for both phones and tablets, I wouldn't count out Android tablets at all.

I'm a fan of both iOS and Android, but I think Windows will essentially kill Android as a tablet OS.

I think the opposite.

I think Android, powered by its tablet and smartphone marketshare combined with x86 and ARM compatibility, will eventually make Windows a small player in the consumer computer market.

Maybe the companies won't give in for a while, but I expect most Windows's PCs in people homes to be replaced by Android (or iOS) devices within ten years.

I agree with you and think this is far more likely scenario.

I would believe this if Windows 8 on ARM supported legacy apps but it doesnt

And supposedly the ARM version wont be out until 2013 giving Google plenty of time to market Android tablets. Because quite frankly Honeycomb was never a full investement, only a trial run

Its only this year that we will see just how much Android tablets can sell
