Why do Americans not care about Soccer?

The best part of soccer is watching some piss ant European country with an inferiority complex implode on itself after a win/loss/tie.

Oh look, I can be a bigoted jackass too 😀
I don't care the sport or country. Any time somebody gets really upset over the loss of perfect strangers in a game I always laugh my ass off. I've seen grown men scream at the tv and throw things and get genuinely upset. It's so downright pitiful.

Watching soccer is very boring & I have no interest in it. World Cup or not, I don't really feel like watching it. I'll catch the highlights on Sportscenter before I go to bed. If the US team loses, it's ok, because I didn't really expect them to win anyway.

Agreed, very few, if any, soccer players can match physiques with an NFL player of the same size, like an Running Back. There is 6' 200lbs, and then there is 6' 200lbs. Sure, the soccer guys are in shape.......to run a lot. The NFL guys would outclass them in every other measure of physical strength. That wouldn't even be close.

And, more than likely, speed as well. NFL players are incredibly fast and many of those CBs and RBs have world-class speed and would toast a soccer player in a 100 meter dash.

To the subject: Americans don't like soccer for many reasons, one being....it's just too simple. Ball/Foot/Goal. It's not a thinking man's sport at all. Ball/Foot/Goal. It's that simple. Sure, there's some simple strategy involved, but it pales in comparison to the biggest American sports.....Basketball, Football, Baseball. You might not like our sports, and might even think they're boring (baseball), but they require FAR more thought and expertise to actually PLAY and COACH than soccer.
Having played soccer as a youth, it is definitely fun, but not to watch.

The bad thing about soccer is that you can watch all damn day and see nothing happen. Or you can get up, go get a drink in the kitchen, return to the sofa and you could have missed the only score of the day.

Remember the quote Kobe Bryant had a few weeks ago about the US media making a big deal about Lebron James' injured elbow? His comment was basically that "its Cleveland. Anytime anything happens in Cleveland, its big news." That is kind of why Europeans like soccer. They are used to nothing happening...so they are not bored watching nothing happen on a sports field.

People get emotional over things they're passionate about. I'm sure there's things that you get upset about that sports fans would find "pitiful".

Soccer - it ranks up there with baseball, [American] football, golf, etc - just too slow for my tastes.

NHL is where it's at - quick plays, quick decisions, and an awesome check/fight every now and then.

Wow. I love football, but a lot of you guys are just talking out of your ass. 🙄

In the following rant I shall refer to football as 'football'. It's pointless trying to explain to Americans why football isn't a boring game or a wussy game - shit - in some ways it IS a wussy game... if you're English and you want to see massive guys smashing into eachother you watch Rugby which is a whole different case of lager. Football isn't about that. Football is about skill. Individual and team skill at football and nothing else. It doesn't matter if someone is 5'5 and looks like a sack of potatoes if he's good at FOOTBALL. It doesn't matter if it's 1-0 and the second half is fucking tedious. It MATTERS because it's FOOTBALL.

*end*

wait. you're talking about soccer. you had me confused for a moment. you can't have a 1-0 football game. duh.

Americans watch what they play and frankly most of them are too fat, lazy, slow to play soccer without collapsing within 15 minutes, so it's just never taken off. With baseball, football, etc. you can eat, get fat (linebackers, holla), move for 15 seconds then you get a break so most of the time is in fact spent recovering.

I'd much rather watch the tour de france...

yeah, those linebackers look HUGE.

They look huge due to amount of padding that they wear.

OMG, this guy looks huge. He must kick ass at everything. He is my new hero. Look at these well defined muscles.

Apparently they plan on replacing humans with mutants...Good luck playing this shit. Your weenine will fall of...LoL

Compare that to the purity of real football. No padding, breaks every 5 seconds, stupid referee "umpire" calls. Just pure skill, tactics, endurance, and yes - occasional luck and theatrics. But basketball players do that to.

It's called training. I doubt the average soccer player would last that long in bjj match for example. Maybe he wouldn't get gassed as fast as a football player. But maybe he wouldn't last as long as a marathon runner. You're using your muscles in totally different ways when you're rolling. You see it all the time. Big strong guys who are natural athletes get gassed after a few minutes in the cage. And this is with the instructor just playing with the guy. I think there's a benefit to cross training. If you look in the health and fitness forum. In Jan of '09 I went from running 0 miles and doing 0 cardio a week and ran in a marathon about 14 weeks later. I trained myself to run 26 miles in 4:35. Not great but good enough for me. I also had started an MMA class that January which also benefited me immensely cardio-wise. We had soccer players and they'd get gassed after a round of boxing. It's just not apples to oranges when you compare athletes of different sports. A football player is wearing pads but he's also carrying around an extra 25-30 pounds. Then you hear about army guys who are doing 20 mile marches carrying 100lbs of gear/armor. I'd like to see an average athlete from any sport do that without some training.

Do soccer leagues / fans measure & report the speed of their players? You always hear about measurables in football and to some degree baseball & basketball.

Seems like there would be several measurables that would be relavent to soccer teams,
10 yard (meter) dash, 40, 100, and something like a 5k pace

I'm curious if guys like Ronaldo can run a 4.4 or they're more like 4.7.

im sure they know how fast they can cover a standard distance but its not a meaningful stat like it is in football. and there are some that could run it faster then 4.4. some of those guys are stupid fast

Please elaborate. As I said, I would bet that an NFL cornerback is more than likely faster than a pro soccer player. I'm referring to averages, of course. I might be wrong, but then again, I might not be.

The soccer defenders calling NFL players "fat" are the ones talking out of their asses. Some guy actually said an NFL cornerback was fat. Seriously?

this made me lol

Also, a sport where you can't use your hands? You're just watching a bunch of amputee zombies trying to wiggle a ball towards a net in armless frustration and rage. I've played L4D2, so I know how that scenario plays out.

Good question and I am trying to find that answer. The NFL speeds and records are all over the place and corners are usually the fastest. I read that Darrell Green was once clocked doing a 4.09 40 in training camp in 1986. That is incredible.
