Seems like a freaking drug addict crackpot cult out there for Soccer ("futbol").

It doesn't appeal to me at all.

It's one of the very few sports I do like watching. I don't go out of my way to watch it, but if it's on the tube, it gets my attention.

I watched soccer once. It was like watching paint dry because no one scored. And then they kicked field goals or something.
 
Because it's fucking boring and the players have a reputation for being whiny babies bent on abusing and manipulating the rules of the game instead of playing by the spirit of them.
 
Probably because USA have always sucked at it, and since they are so proud, they decided to just write it off and ignore it

Its tons of fun to play, but as for watching it really depends on the teams... Some games are incredibly boring (usually teams with tactical/defensive mindset), but those games where teams play offensively and try to score as many goals as possible are awesome

For people saying boring I lol, baseball and golf are a hundred times more boring than football (yes, FOOTBALL, not soccer)

Only the US would call a game played mainly by hand "football" -.-

People tend to enjoy the sports they have been exposed to. Take Americans - a lot of you guys don't realize that baseball is, in fact, the most boring sport ever conceived. We don't hold it against you - you were brought up with it, much like many of my countrymen were brought up with cricket (ugh).

Baseball is taking a bat and hitting a ball as hard as you can... nothing boring about it ..:awe:

Of course, my favorite being American Football, though I have never played it personally .. so not exactly fitting with your theory.
 
Chicken and egg. Other than David Beckham I bet the average american household couldn't name one single profession soccer player. But you can't entirely blame them because it's not the least bit covered on any major sports stations/sports news casts around here. Without the exposure there can't be interest. Without interest they won't offer it.

Not saying that professional stars are the driving force of interest...but I don't see many kids with a soccer star photo on the wall or wearing soccer jersies around here. So who wants to play a sport that no one cares about/recognizes outside of high school and some colleges?
 
Played through high school and am a fan, but it's just not a TV sport - that's why Americans hate it.

In Futbol, the refs don't stop play everytime someone makes a ten yard pass, while one team gyrates and celebrates like they won the lottery.

Actually though - it's because the camera angles you have to show it in suck. In american football and hoops, you get lots of close in and iso camera angles during a play. For futbol, you have to pull the camera way out because the current field of play is so much larger than halfcourt in hoops or the 15 yards from scrimmage. There are also many more breaks, more scoring (american football fakes it by giving 6 pts for a TD though), and more stats and measures of progress. Futbol is more fluid.

If you could show futbol at that same camera distance, you'd see the same types of highly technical moves and freakish athletic ability that you see in basketball and hoops, but it doesnt translate from a press box cam.

Edit - I think we could tailor futbol to the american audience if refs were quicker to call PKs, but only award them a point, while goals during play were worth 2. It'd also help if the offside rule only applied "inside the 20"... That would open up 30 or so yards of the opponents side of the field and make it really hard to defend. I think games would have scores like 9-7, all the time (or 63-49 if you wanna use the american system).

Because this game does not allow frequent commercial breaks, thus pissing off the advertisers. They are the ones that decide what the American public gets to watch.
 
It's a really neat atmosphere surrounding the world cup but I'm limited on time working the job I do. So the few hours a week I watch tv I'd rather watch a good mma match or the NBA finals.
 
If I need a nap, I turn on a ball game. The shape or size of the ball doesn't matter.

A huge waste of time that could be spent on ATOT.

i don't know if thats it. i was born outside the US...had more exposure to soccer before i even knew what american sports were but I think basketball and football and even baseball and hockey are more interesting sports to watch and play.
 
I think it has to do with the fact that- while there's a lot of action - the scoring is few and far between.

With American Football, there's a lot of action and scoring happens every few minutes. With Soccer---you can go 45 minutes without a goal. It gets boring after a while.

Also, the fact that soccer leagues have a tendency to show up in gay porn.... 😀

For those who dont know, MANY teams play defensively with 0-0 mindset, just going for the draw, OR they score a goal, and then defend that goal until the end instead of trying to score more... And then yes, football becomes boring to watch

Fortunately, some teams out there still play football the way it was meant to be played, always looking for more goals no matter what, open games are the most fun

And yeah, you can definitely tell that football doesnt fit into the "american" stereotype... Well, Im not american so I dont know exactly how it works, but your TV always seems to be based on short attention spans... Not just on sports, but everything else... Here in europe, commercial breaks are few and far between, but in America, its like every 5-10 minutes, its ridiculous

Thats probably why Americans think football is so boring, sitting through 45 minutes of a sport without commercials, LOL
