Why do all Windows system files have 8.3 filenames?

How come all (or most) windows system files and drivers have 8.3 filenames? Doesn't windows support filenames up to 255 characters long? Can't driver developers ditch 8.3 filenames like "CTPRXY2K.SYS"

and use something longer and more descriptive? Can someone shed some light on this for me? 😕

Thanks

For backwards compatibility.

If teh LFN entry for that critical system file gets damaged (which is fairly easy under FAT16/32), your system can still run, as the file name remains the same.
