linux is only garbage if you don't know how to use it properly. I assume you have no fscking clue how to.

Linux is not garbage.

It is not the savior of all geekdom... yet.

But it is not garbage.

I prefer Debian. I haven't really messed around with it because, like brtspears2, I want to play games.

That is Linux's biggest hole at the moment. Game support.

One day, maybe more software companies will support it. Then Microcrap will have to shape up for some real competition.

Until then, we must live in both worlds. ;)

Linux's biggest hole isn't gaming it's the fact that newbie users don't know how to use it. It has a high learning curve but once you know how to fix it/use it/make it for you it's way better than windows.

That's why I'm thinking about getting a Mac w/ OS X. It has most of the benfits of Linux, well BSD, in something that actually works 90% of the time.

what distro, how is it 'much different' that makes it so impressive? It's just linux.

I've only had Windows crash on me once since Windows 95.

I wouldn't consider Linux's learning curve a hole.

That is one of the things I like about it. It turns the computer from an appliance, to an "entity." That is not to say that it thinks on it's own... But it makes you think. It causes you to actually understand the OS to some degree. In the process, you learn how to prevent almost all of your own problems. That in turn, keeps you from asking me - and others like me - to fix your machines for you.
[/RANT]

:D

Well that, and the lack of a registry to foul things up. :p

Hmm.. I prevent my own problems with winxp and some freeware apps. My machine runs great, and requires very little maintanence. Regardless of how it runs, i wont be going Linux untill I have a pc that doesnt have the intent to play games.

Linux general sucks. The fonts are usually ugly software is a pain to install and the chance of having all the dependeces is about 10%.

The only cool thing about unix in genral is x11 tunneling. It kicks some much ass being able to log into different computers and have everything basicly work like it should.

I've given up on Linux evangalism for the most part. Microsoft does a far better job of it then I could anyway.

fwiw, I run RedHat 9 at home & work. Just installed Fedora Core 2 Test 1 on a new box I built. Haven't done much on it yet, but the install was smooth as silk.

Doesnt apt-get and synaptic solve the dependency problem for you?
Plus, there are an assload of fonts you can try in linux so I wouldnt give up just yet.

Not using your computer much then, hey? Unless you mean that you jumped from 95 to 2000/XP, in which case I can understand.

Linux has one great thing, it's free and the applications included are pretty good. I don't know how long that will last though, I mean programmers have to eat too.
