Olestra Is the generic name for hexa-, hepta- and octa-esters of sucrose - trade name Olean (Procter & Gamble). It is intended as a fat substitute in foods and in processing, including frying and baking. Since it is not digested or absorbed and passes through the body unchanged, it has the potential to reduce the intake of energy from dietary fats as is recommended by various health authorities. It also has a small effect on reducing blood levels of cholesterol.

The first thing that springs to mind in response to "Olestra" is "anal leakage".

But I mean, what kind of leakage is it? Runny shits that sneak out of your anus? Or something more sinister? Either way, disgusting.

maybe.. just maybe, people are starting to realize that low fat foods are moronic. how about instead you just eat less? why can't people understand this concept? when you buy low fat/calorie/carb foods, you just end up eating more of them, which in the end just ends up costing more and making the rich richer and stupid poorer.

you know, by giving overweight people side effects like "anal leakage" one might be able to give them such a bad experience they would never eat fatty foods again.

heh, the best part was

~Regardless, the FDA approved it. But the only company brave enough to actually try to get people to eat it is Frito-Lay, which has come out with Olestra-enhanced versions of its popular snack foods called WOW! Chips, available at your favorite supermarket. "WOW!" is a great name, because it conveys shock and apprehension: "WOW! Check out my underpants!" or "WOW! What the hell just landed in the toilet?!"~

Two words: Loose stools

When people eat junk food, they eat a LOT of it so the effects were multiplied past what lab testing with real portions showed.

Because fat americans simply don't care enough. I personally really like the WOW chips. no leakage for me, though admittedly my feces in the toilet puts down an oil slick the next morning. I'd have to question as to how safe that stuff really is.

I'd say part of the reason though is that if you're eating chips you're not on a diet, and if you're on a diet you're probably not eating chips, even if they're "somewhat" lower in calories.
