Why didnt manning want to go to the chargers?

because the chargers tend to suck pretty bad. they wanted eli to end up with a team that tends to perform well.

He wanted to be on a winning team or none at all. Talk about spirit of the game! :-\

I'd laugh my ass off if the chargers managed to do well this season.

the chargers have had the worst win/loss record out of all the nfl for the past 9 years. they have had top draft picks for a lot of these years, and yet still remain in the cellar year after year. also, marty doesnt have the greatest track record of grooming young qb's into greatness. there are more reasons, pretty much his dad doesnt want his son to go through what he did.

edit: but still, thats the roll of the dice and the way the draft is. i dont agree with the way this was all handled, and the things said and the threats, but it all worked out in the end. and as much as i like to think i can see their point, im still secretly hoping that eli bombs.

Bernie Kosar did just fine. 3 division titiles and 2 afc championship games in 4 years under Marty.

Yeah...this is similar to the steve francis thing that went down a couple of years ago...ive noticed how alot athletes are demanding and directing where they want to play. Nick Van Exel said he wont play basketball unless he plays for one of the teams in Texas. I think thats lame, but he does want to be closer to his son. Anyways, alittle I went alittle offtopic, but thanks for the input everyone.

The Charger suck factor. I don't know if there were specific issues between Archie/Peyton and certain members of the San Diego organization, it wouldn't surprise me. whatever the reasons, Eli was in the unique position where he could easily sit out a year due to his very wealthy family and re-enter the draft. I doubt that Archie intended for their stand against the Chargers to go public, but it pretty much had to come out. What did he expect, that the Chargers would just quietly and inexplicably trade their shot at the top QB prospect right before the draft?

I generally feel that people who do this are pricks. I wouldn't mind seeing Eli bomb either, but that's in no small part because he'll be playing for the Giants!

That I really don't have a problem with. He's not saying, "I don't want to play for your team because I'm too good for you." He's saying, "I want to stay in a specific geographical localtion, that has 3 NBA teams, so I can stay close to my son." One is being a brat one is not.

My brother, a huge Colts fan, never liked Elway 'cause Elway did the same thing when he was drafted. Speaking of the Colts, they weren't much better than the Chargers until Peyton & Co. came on. And Look at Steve Young, he started out throwing in Tampa Bay. I can understand a father wanting the best for his
kid(s) but stuff like this just irritates me. And depending on well Eli does this could jeopadize his relationship w/this teammates. If things don't go well right off the bat are the other Giants going to see their QB as leader they can rally behind or as a kid who gets stuff because his dad is a famous QB?
