Why didnt Cheney run for Pres?

JEDI

Lifer
it's unusual for a VP to NOT run for pres when the current pres hits his term limit.
(biden had a excuse. his son just died a little before primary kickoff season so he didn't have the emotional strength to endure the campaign.)

why did cheney become VP if didn't have his eyes set on Pres?
was he hoping for the Zero Year curse to take Bush Jr and thus be Pres w/o a fight?

After the complete and utter catastrophic condition the nation was left in as Bush/Cheney left office, I'm pretty sure the GOP leadership and the rank and file Repubs had had enough of those two. I feel certain that Cheney, in his chronic history-re-writing mindset, certainly wanted to "set the record straight" via that old axiom of "the winner gets to write history", but the GOP leadership knew he'd never have even the slightest of chances of grabbing first chair.

And really, the nation didn't need to go through another eight years of what that failed administration wreaked on us........well, the very rich got a yuuuuuuuge payoff, but the rest of us, we're still in recovery mode from that epic train wreck.

In that light, I'm still wondering why the Repubs are able to compete as well as they do with the exact same ideology that guided the Bush/Cheney administration into allowing, if not causing, the devastation of the nation's economic engine.

He was president during the Dubya period. Dubya was just there for show like those banana republics. Cheney would tell him what to do, what to sign etc..

1) You have to have some form of insanity to want to be president. You can legitimately call Cheney many things, but insane isn't one of them.

2) Only 4 vice presidents were elected to go right from VP to president (John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren and George H.W. Bush). Three failed (John Breckinridge, Richard Nixon and Al Gore). Nixon eventually won but years later. That really isn't a great track record.

3) He was very much hated, even by his own party.

Being hated doesn't matter. Cruz is outright loathed by his own party, but just watch as they all line up to vote for him.

woah.. only 7? would have thought there were more 2 term pres than that in our ~250yr democracy?

or were there ALOT of vp of 2term pres that didn't run???

I left off the large number of VPs that became president when the president died in office.

But then having a "once-VP and now president" running for office is fundamentally different than having a true-VP run as president.

hm.. was going to say how many of those Presidents that died while in office were in their 2nd term?
(answer: 8 pres died while in office. 3 were past their 1st term.)

now gotta rethink this term limit thing because of FDR. 😱
when I saw his name as one of the ones that died in office, it immediately hit me that pres term limits are a recent thing.
