Most Western Europeans actually have Eastern European origins since a lot of people moved to the west when the Mongols were busy conquering large parts of Asia and Europe.

Europe consists of lots of different nations on a relatively small and fertile piece of land. Which means lots of wars because of envy or greed. Which in turn caused lots of improvements to weaponry and transport.

A lot of inventions come from wars, and eventhough the Catholic Church tried to limit progress on a lot of fields their greed and expansionism knew no limits, so they encouraged 'converting' people by whatever means. Millions of native Americans and Africans died thanks to that.

And then there is of course the trade method. The Dutch did a lot of trading, and were the first to (be allowed to) trade with a lot of countries since they knew how to deal with people. Where the Italians, Spanish, French and English came 'in name of the king' and told people they were superior and that they'd bring an army if they didn't get what they wanted the Dutch showed respect, and thus were the first foreigners to be allowed to trade with Japan for example. And if you make friends it's easy to gain power somewhere too.
The slave trade for example, a lot of people think that 'the white people' actually captured them all themselves. The reality is that it was many times a matter of the Europeans making friends with one powerful tribe, and promising them they could keep the land they captured if they delivered the inhabitants as slaves. So a lot of African tribes got weapons from the Europeans and would then round up other tribes to be shipped off, while making themselves stronger by taking the lands of the other tribes.
