Why did we install Ahmad Chalabi as head of the INC?

Isn't he wanted in Jordan for fraud and embezzlement? Seems like our priorities should be to return a convicted criminal to serve his sentence.

As far as I know he became the head of the INC on his own. We did install him on the IGC however. He is a friend of Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Perle etc. and as such has a lot of pull at the Pentagon.
 
He is still wanted there as an international fugative, and if caught will be returned for sentencing.
He was the founder of the INC, and was supplying the data to the Bush Administration that they
wanted to hear - his reward for co-operation was to be as appointment of the interm president of
Iraq while the country went through a stabilization time frame until 'Official' elections could be held.

Calition of the 'Willing'

A tremendpus ammount of the fasle data that Bush pinned his Iraq War on was provided by him
to the neo-con cabal, which orchestrated the manipulation of good data to be blended with the
Chalabi falsifications, that way Bush could simply say that 'We got some bad intelligence'.
 
Yeah, Chalabi was always buddy buddy with the people over at the Pentagon. I always found it interesting how Chalabi's dubious info was considered fact. I never (and still don't) trusted the guy, and it made me sick to see this guy put in a position of power. Hell, even Iraqi's are suspicious of his motives.
 
Ayup...Chalabi is pretty much the one-man source for all of Bush's deceipt for the war on Iraq.

Amazing how he relied upon one Iraqi defector over his own intelligence community. Amazing.
 
Good question. Most people know nothing of this man, yet he was absolutey paramount when it came to going to war with Iraq.
 
Besides being a convicted felon, Chalabi is something of a nutcase. Some of the claims he has made over the last couple of years are Twilight Zone funny, or would be, if the Bush admin didn't seem to put absolute stock in them.

Someone should try to Google some of them up, maybe later I will. The guy has zero credibility, yet he's still on our government's payroll to the tune of hundred's of thousand of dollars as an intel source.
 
How things have changed. Four months ago, Ahmad Chalabi sat behind behind Laura Bush at the president's State of the Union address four months ago. Now he is the enemy. The US broke into his home and took his computers looking for evidence of fraud.

I think GWB et al are going to try to make him the scape goat for the Iraqi invasion mess they have gotten the US in.
 
A better question in my mind is why this wasnt hammered away at BEFORE he was selected. It was brought up, but nothing much made of it. That is why I dont buy the "liberal press" was against this war argument


The answer is Wolfowitz needed someone we felt we could promote and control. Wolfie knew exactly what he was doing.

Anyway, it would appear Chalabi was working for the Iranians, according to one story I've read. So I suppose, if true, it could be argued that Iran got us to take Saddam out for them so that a fundamentalist government could take charge in Iraq-after driving out the U.S. Vietnam style. Very clever.
