Why did these teens get away with this?

Oh man, that's awful. What did those kids think would happen when they started taking down stop signs?! Somemone was bound to get hurt/killed and that's exactly what happened. Besides jailtime (if they get it), I think a good punishment for them would be many many hours of communtiy service.

Another vote for letting them listen to Deeko sing. Play both his songs on repeat. Then lets see who's crying after that. ;)

<gripe>I agree. That is totaly ludicrous. What goes through a child's head when the remove stop signs? I mean Dear Lord seriously. This angers me to no end, it's absolutely tasteless and simply pathetic. They should have their butts nailed to the wall, that's it, simple. They deserve hell for this. I think an example should be made of them, perhaps if we make more public examples of people who commit this kind of behavior then society might get the picture and try something to fix it. There's a recent incident in my area that's similar. A few swimmers had a tradition of papering the other members houses the night before the meet so they were out driving at 1 in the morning with a junior liscense(given to 16 year olds before they get their official one in 6 months <-- PA Law. Also, they aren't allowed to drive after 11 pm) but they drove anyway and then they decided to race and one of the drivers lost control and veered off the road. 2 other children died because of this absolute stupidity. My condolences to the parents of the children but I hope that these drivers get reemed for this, they deserve it, I don't care how old they are they need to be imprisioned. There's no excuse. Be mature, it's that simple. I honestly think that 16 is way too young to get your driver's liscense, in fact, I think 18 is young in many cases, kids just don't act mature. It's true that many do but a lot don't, and nor do a lot of people in their adult years either but something should be done about young careless drivers. I'm 16 myself and will soon by getting my senior liscense but I still wouldn't mind waiting another 2 years or more if it would save the lives of those lost in stupid accidents like this. Just my two cents ... </gripe>

I agree, screwing with road regulations which are in place for safety reasons is an awful thing to do, but the driver couldn't have been that alert either. How exactly do you drive into an intersection, see no stop signs and a tractor trailer, and decide to not use caution? Understandably it's not completely the driver's fault, but unless it was a blind intersection where the car wouldn't have seen anything until he was already in the truck's path, IMHO this might've been avoided had the driver been paying a little more attention.

One half of me wants to compare this to the pranks where people add or change the numbers on speed limit signs, but it's not as obvious a prank to the driver when someone completely removes a stop sign. I don't think the teens (being the idle-minded, culture driven - you can probably thank shows like Jackass for this one, group that we are) completely understood the effect that their little prank would cause. On the other hand, there is the possibility that these kids wanted to see someone die so that they'd know in their own mind that they could affect other people (to feel important) in some way.

This case has been fought out here foer a long time. There was never any proof that these kids did this.

Yes they stole other signs. This one was not stolen, but pulled up or knocked down & left there. There was great debate over whether it was knocked down by a truck several days before & not noticed by road maintenance.

There was only 1 witness who was afriend of the 3. He said they told him they did it .... but during the trial he changed his story & said the prosecutor frightened him with threats of jail ( for being an accomplice )& made him lie.

This is not near as clear cut as the news story makes it sound.

*sigh* Teenagers like that make us "better behaved" teenagers look like stupid, idiotic jackasses. Why can't they get the stupid rocks out of their heads and think straight? Sheeesh! We're surrounded by fools in this world...

but hopefully if there is a clear cut case, those kids will be hanged
At least their example will prevent future such accidents from happening.

<<During the trial, Cole said he, Baillie, and Miller took down as many as 19 signs along the rural roads of Hillsborough County, about 20 miles east of Tampa, the night before the accident. But Cole told jurors he and his friends did not touch the stop sign at the intersection where the fatal accident occurred.>>

If you believe that, then I've got a bridge to sell you. In the unlikely event that he was telling the truth, I still think they should get a couple of years just for removing the other signs.

HINT ... They had the signs they admitted to taking ....

The one stop sign in question would be the only sign that was taken down & not stolen ....

I watched this trial when it originally aired on CourtTV, as well as subsequent follow-ups. This particular stop sign was in such a position that apparently semis would run it over frequently. There were several times when the reporter went back to check on the intersection that the sign was laying down on the ground because someone ran over it.

That's not to say that these three boneheads didn't take it down the first time - like I said, I watched the trial the first time, and I happen to think they did take this sign down, despite the later evidence that this sign was down a lot. But there's a difference between being guilty of something and being legally convicted.
