The Republican party felt their chances at holding onto power slipping away as the Democrats were becoming more and more popular. They decided their best chance at success as a party was to appeal to the racism in the South and the racists that live there since they are the majority. This was dubbed the Southern Strategy by political scientists and historians.
In 2005, the literal chair of the Republican National Committee apologized in a speech to the NAACP - FOR LITERALLY EXPLOITING RACISM FOR POLITICAL GAINS
"In July, he apologized to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's annual convention for the Republicans' so-called "Southern strategy," which used race as a wedge issue to bolster support among white voters in the Democratic South, beginning with Richard Nixon's successful 1968 presidential campaign.

benefit politically from racial polarization. His words. And very true. Empty gesture as the GQP loves the racists to this day.
So when pieces of shit like Taj say the parties are still the same, ignore their sick drivel and point anybody you are discussing this with to that Fox News article with the RNC chair's own words. Also show them embracing the racist white supremacist confederate flag. And so many other things. But as far as the Southern Strategy, the GQP has admitted to that strategy I outlined above in order to win the votes of racist white southerners and start winning elections in the South to maintain power.
