I've been installing a dual boot NT/2K system this morning at work. NT is cool. It sets up the network correctly during install. It asks for IP addresses/WINS/DNS/etc and then adds you to the domain.

Win2K, on the other hand, only asks for Domain name and then tries to find the domain without any DNS/WINS servers defined. How dumb is that?

Actually Electric I'm inclined to agree with you on the Win2K install.

However, it's a small price to pay for the monstrous improvement in all other areas over NT4.

You are gonna reinstall just for that???

BTW, I checked it out and yeah, the advanced option allows you to put in DNS and WINS values. Just go to settings, control panel, network, LAN (whatever number here), properties, then check your tcp/ip for your nic :p

Sure I'm going to reinstall. I just barely got it finished. Haven't even loaded video drivers yet. Besides, I still have 1.5 hours before I can go home. ;)

Actually the reason they don't ask for DNS/WINS is because they assume you're installing the PC in a Win2K network running Active Directory. DNS is integrated into AD, and there is no WINS. Name resolution via dynamic DNS.

Of course if you've installed it already, why don't you just enter DNS and WINS info manually? Check Properties under TCP/IP.

I could do that, virtuamike, but then I wouldn't resolve the fact of whether or not it allows you to enter the DNS/WINS info during setup or if I'm just a dork! hahahaha

AHA! You have to go through the "Install Custom Components" part of the "Network Install" to get to the settings.

So, I guess I'm just a dork. Don't anyone tell the mods, tho. They'll renig my *Elite* status. ;)
