WHY did Logitech discontinue the G9x?

The mouse seemed to have been selling well, and it was one of the few fingertip mice available, and the ONLY one made by Logitech. Why did they discontinue it?

And isn't it obvious at this point, with remaining inventory selling for $200+, that the mouse is still very popular? It seems utterly insane for the company to completely pull out of a segment of the market and ignore it without a replacement.

My G9 is 7 years old and I'm not sure how much longer it will last. I did actually buy a G9x as a spare, but I lost it in the moving process.

I remember reading the Logitech forums several years ago when someone was asking why they didn't continue the MX300 line on when the first went from MX series to G series, and the response from a rep was that they basically will not support products they consider to be too niche to their vision (ie if they dont think they can sell a million+ units or whatever number, they simply won't bother with it)

Not surprisingly, we eventually saw a G3, but that was discontinued fairly quickly, and then we saw the same thing with the G300. But each time that the North American market lost those options, they stayed on and strong in Asian market (G300 still available if you change the region on the logitech website) because the demand for smaller (and cheaper) mice is much higher.

basically, you can blame all our ham-fisted american gamers who think they need a million buttons and flashy lights to be a pro gamer.

That being said, I thought the G9 (and later G9x) had carved out a large enough niche to remain on indefinitely; although apparently Logitech reps have learned to at least supply some hope instead of being painfully blunt:

i think they discontinued these because they are moving on the more updated mouses. probably ones with better tech. i got a g9x and i still love mine.

But they aren't. It's been a year and there is no replacement for the G9. The Logitech people just say "Buy so and so mouse because it has a similar shape". By similar shape they mean a huge palm grip mouse that has nothing in common with the G9

BTW other companies do make fingertip mice, but I don't think any of them has onboard profiles. You have to install their bloatware to customize the mouse.

Because companies are not like old farts who glorify everything made "back in my day" and move on to newer things.

yeah, its a pretty disturbing trend

Razer was first to introduce the onboard memory (IIRC) to store drivers/settings so that you could set up your mouse on one computer and then it would work that way on any subsequent computer...

but then Razer thought, why waste profit margin on an physical chip for each mouse when we can get that same functionality by tricking consumers into installing our software that does it all "in the cloud!"

so now each new mouse is less complex but costs the same, awesome Razer, awesome.

and of course if it ever catches on and enough consumers get upset about it, and/or sales just become too stale, Razer can bring that feature back as if they're doing us a favor, and likely charge extra for the models that support what was a common feature.

This is equivalent to a Ford ending production of the Mustang and not replacing it... Going from many thousands of sales to zero in that segment of the market, and telling consumers "Just buy a Taurus instead". Except I'm pretty sure the fans of the Mustang would rather buy another car from another manufacturer that meets their needs, like a Camaro.

I think this is the result of the execs not understanding that the G9 filled a niche that their other mice do not. They don't have any comprehension of different mouse shapes, to them a mouse is a mouse.

So buy a Camaro.

It was like the most bought and returned mouse in history, every computer store I ever went to the G9x boxes were always beat to hell from being bought and returned so many times.

I think Logitech replaced it with the G502.

same reason the killed the G7 and the MX518

they are morons

now I realize the 518 and the G400 are basically the same. however they changed the material on te G series, the one I have feels like it was coated in Teflon and made my hand hurt after 30 min because there is zero grip on the fing thing

I have no idea why they made such a boneheaded move. Same with microsoft discontinuing the intellimouse 3.0, although im used to MS doing stupid things its less common for Logitech.

I just want a mouse that dosent get in the way and will last years and the G9x was that mouse. When mine dies im boned.

My G9 died! It disconnects itself from the computer frequently.

How are the Corsair M series mice? Do they require drivers or do onboard profiles let DPI settings, refresh, programming, etc function without software?

I dread the day this happens to me 🙁

I just had a quick look at the available mice... a load of overpriced sh*te is all I could see 😵 Wheres the intellimouse? That was my backup plan, just get one of those. Have they stopped making that as well?!

Just saw a G9x in the FS/trade forum here and thought of this thread.

I'm using a CM storm spawn now but the G9/x was more comfortable. I own 3 of them and they all have different issues over time which is why I'm not using them. I'm not going to pay $200. They really need to make a replacement with the same shape and maybe just improve the scroll wheel button a little, I'll buy 2.

i have had a g9x for years and its amazing still. i love the dpi and weight setting of the mouse. i am kind of sad that they discontinued it even though it was quite pricey.
