Why did I hate Gears of War?

Cover system is complicated, yea I guess hitting the A button is hard, you should be able to think at the machine and have it take cover for you

I'm not sure how you're making the cover "feature" more complicated. Go up to something, press A and you're in cover. Then press the left trigger to pop out and aim at the head or legs of the enemy (might need to wait for them to pop out of cover first) and fire. Perhaps you're not understanding that you can't just go running around not aiming (by pressing just the right trigger) and not be behind cover almost the whole time and make it anywhere?

I cannot figure it out. I got an Xbox 360 for Christmas (thanks mom), and I got some games for it.

I picked up Gears of War...the graphics were great..soundtrack great!..but the gameplay...uhhhhh

I consistently have a hard time playing FPS on the 360... love em on the pc, but dont like using a controller to turn/strafe... I had this same issue when I demoed GRAW a while back.

any suggestions? can I use a keyboard and mouse on the 360?

also...the main gripe I had with Gears of War is that it is the cover feature is way more complicated than it needed to be.

thread updated..sorry I hit enter accidently before typing

why do i hate it when people answer thier own questions?

Yeh If your used to playing FPS games on the PC, its hard to step down onto console FPS games. Mouse & Keyboard > All console controllers.

Uhhh what?

The cover system is one button, and sometimes that same button and a direction.

It's perhaps the most intuitive cover system ever designed.

GoW != FPS

How is the cover feature complicated? You push A to take cover and push A or pull away to get out of cover. What's so hard about that?

Your main gripe here basically sounds like you suck at controlling the character and therefore you don't like the game.

i didnt like the game cuz its stupid and repetitive. its still fun, just not fulfulling. its the same thing over and over. unless something changes with the enemies drastically since i stopped playing, then i assume the whole game is all grubs....in groups....trying to kill you.

The enemies do change, and the bosses are pretty damn cool to fight.

The last level has the most incredible graphics I've ever seen in a game too.

No kidding. Did you even play past the first level dotcom? I'm almost certain that you run into a machine gun (I forget what they call them in the game but they're fairly tough to take out) and wretches in like the second level.

By their very nature games are repetitive. I can't think of a single game where you're not doing just the same thing over and over. What makes a good game is that its fun to do the same thing over and over.

Gears of War sucks. Gameplay is fine its just the story telling that sucks and the dialogue sucks too. Not a lot of wow moments. Hideo Kojima should make a FPS

If you're coming from a PC FPS gaming background you will have the 360 controls until you get used to them. Pick up a decent FPS game and play it through using the joysticks; by the time you're done you will be comfortable enough to play other FPS with console controllers. I just ran through Far Cry on the original Xbox and now I'm pretty decent with aiming and whatnot...took me a long time to overcome my 6+ years of PC gaming background though.

It's quite obvious you didn't play through the entire game.

I liked GoW myself, but I don't understand why someone would play through a game they don't enjoy. If the beginning isn't any good (in the opinion of the player), who cares about the middle and end?

I've had the game for a month and can't seem to make myself play beyond the search for the resonator. It's a gorgeous game (even though my sdtv doesn't do it justice) but for the life of me I can't get use to aiming with my thumb. Also, I'm use to "peppering" my targets in shooters (short bursts over a few seconds). In this game it feels like I have to lay a constant amount of fire on a target for it to drop. In multiplayer the "peppering" method will get you served fast, so I've learned. Guess I'm use to PC-FPS and the ol' lifebar...

Way to be one-dimensional people... you shouldn't call yourself a gamer if all you can do is play one way.

It's got a few bugs too. Some notable ones:
- Beserkers can get stuck on doorways and debris. Then they just stand there, and won't follow you, which is required to destroy them.
- Enemies may stand down if you're ducking and a teammate is wounded. They just kind of stand there, even if you point your gun around the corner and shoot at them.
- Your own guys can pin you down in a small room. I went into a small room for some ammo, and one of the AI guys stood in to guard the door. Then he wouldn't move, and there wasn't enough room for me to get by. Shooting him, grenading him, or pistol whipping him didn't do anything. He just stood there. I had to reload the checkpoint and do the mission again.
- Clipping issues with slanted objects such as trees. If a tree is leaning, it seems to have a vertical hit box - try to shoot in the narrow angle between it and the ground, and you hit an invisible wall.
- Nearly useless AI soldiers, supposedly there to help you out. They'll either stand there idly at precisely the wrong time, or else charge in to suicidally dangerous places.
- The classic use of cramped or dark spaces to create the illusion of a true challenge.

Seems about par for the course though as far as computer games go. An occasionally stupid AI, and hit box issues.
I do sort of like its system of letting you hide behind things and then shoot. Too often though I seem to have a tough time getting it to "unlock" from the walls.

The ONLY thing I can complain about it is that the guns don't feel real, if that makes any sense at all. They aren't load enough or something like that, I don't know.

I did appreciate the fact that they have an option to disable blood/language, since my older brother and I play it (17 and 19), my little 10 year old bro likes it too but we can switch that option on.

it looks good, it sounds good, but im guessing the story is alright (short is what most people say).

im going to play it tomorrow for the first time (ive only watched it before), so im kind of pumped.
