its a crying shame. a American company with a rich history just packs ups and leaves 1600 FAMILIES high and dry. sad sad sad.

Probably for the same reasons that we get our wheat from China to put in our dog/cat food. FFS, couldn't possibly put American wheat in food that we feed animals because it as we all know dog food cost tons of money to produce. Fvck Hershey's. I will no longer buy their products.

QFT!

All the people who blame unions for allowing the workers to have a decent wage and standard of living, certainly seem to think IT workers are worth outrageous salaries...so they can post on ATOT while on the clock...
Why don't IT people get paid $10/hr? it's not like they generally do any REAL work...
Go try doing factory work for a year...you won't think those unions are so bad after that.

What the hell do you expect. It's cheaper that is the only reason. You can pay a hispanic worker less then 1/3 that you pay an American and the job gets done more efficient due to the lack of worker rights that we have here in the U.S.. The same worker rights that inhibit work lowers efficientcy and causes every other company to leave the United States. Have you considered that Americans have done this to themselves......

wow...

I see in your profile you are from Maryland. So how much did our former governor pay you to bash America?

I've shown time and time again this is all by design by the Republican Government so this should not be a surprise.

The resident Republicans have been and continue to be thrilled with every offshore move and doing away with unions.

I originally said their target was $3.96 hr to compete with China but it is clear the target is 25 cents an hr to match Mexico.

Dave, our government can't stop anybody from coming in. They certainly can't stop anybody from leaving.

As can be seen globally, the things that attract industry are the very things that many people here are against:

Less regulation

Lower wages

Lower taxes

---------------------------------

Many complain that the under-developed nations don't get enough help from the richer countries, etc. My "glass half-full" suggestion is to note how successful we've been at assisting these poverty stricken countires by providing them decent jobs...

This is P&N btw, and I did my time in the trenches when I was going to school. You obviously don't work in IT to hold that opinion, just because I can post here while my scrumms are running doesn't mean that I don't do a hell of a lot of real work, which is then in turn sold to customers. I generate money for my company and they compensate me for it. It's as simple as that.

This is the reason they want to allow Mexican trucking companies to drive all over America.. It is all created by rich americans moving down there to take advantage of the lower classes

So much for the great American company packing up and leaving huh?

Smiths Falls will do "everything in our power" to keep Hershey's chocolate plant going, Mayor Dennis Staples vowed Friday, after the company announced it may close the factory in the eastern Ontario town.

 though I don't agree that China poisoned our dogs as much as corporate greed did 🙂

im scared. if this crap continues the middle class will be destoyed. if that happens who is going to buy all the crap that the companies make? I dont think our governement totally understands how bad it is hurting our country by big companies leaving. in my world any company who moves operations to another country gets a automatic 1000% tariff on their imported goods.

Heard someone lately quote the Bible, in the last days merchants will pound their fists because no one can buy their wares. (Something like that)

Canada is moving on to better jobs and throwing our crappy old ones to 3rd world countries. Positively, you could see this as an improving economy.

Hershey can substantially cut labor and environmental costs by going to Mexico and then to China.

For all the people blaming labor for this, can you afford to live on 20% of your current pay check? Do want to live where companies dump their wastes without being responsible for the consequences?

We live in a economy where living wages is disgusting by corporate standards. Circuit city fired workers made $15/hour is an example.

Not all jobs will be affected, but American Dream is on the way out. Our economy depends on expanding low wage scale to all sectors, not just washers or construction workers.

The future is in developing countries like China. America will be its own old Europe in your life time.

Milton Hershey has officially turned over in his grave.
Hershey was appalled at the state of workers at the turn of the century. So he built his first chocalate factory and then built a town around it, called Hershey, Pennsylvania. Hershey built comfortable homes with heating and plumbing and rented them to his workers cheaply. He provided company paid health care. He built cultural centers in town. He paid for the fire and police departments.
He also founded a school for orphans and indigents. And it was great school. In fact he left the Hershey Chocolate company to the school.

Sam Walton too... Trust me, these companies don't have the morals they had when they were started. In the beginning, it was about making money... But the founders often wanted to pass their success down to the workers and make the work environment feel like a family. That all started to really change in the 1980s and corporate america has become this cut-throat world of managers who don't care about the company and only their image to the shareholders.

When they get multi-million dollar saleries, raises, bonuses, stock options and retirements what do they care?

The problem is that the corporations have done a great job of blinding everyone. Americans are too busy to worry about American Idol and Dancing with the stars. Just this week, we've been hearing about Don Imus. Is this really that big of a news story? No. The corporate elites don't want the Americans knowing the truth.

Bwuhahahaha, It's a CANADIAN plant that's moving to Mexico.

Companies who do this kind of stuff should be hit with import taxes, high tarrifs, and treated as if they were a totally foreign company.
FULL USDA inspections, AT 100% company cost, Treat them like the un-Americal pukes they are.

I am sure then that the people of Canada that might lose their jobs and source of income enjoy that you find their plight so laughable. Does it matter that they aren't American jobs? Sounds to me like just another American company putting people out of work so they can increase their profit margin and pay slave wages in a country that does not mind living on those wages.

"The statement followed Thursday's announcement that the Hershey Co. will cut about 1,500 jobs from its workforce of 13,000, reducing production lines by more than one-third, outsourcing some production and building a factory in Mexico as part of a three-year restructuring plan."

Wow, the fact that it is a CANADIAN plant and not an AMERICAN plant really has swayed me into not giving a damn. Thanks!

I guess they don't have enough illegal immigrants in Canada...... yet.

Edit: WTF is this about??

Hershey has been accused of acting in an improper and potentially illegal manner regarding its hiring practices. The industry watchdog site www.cpgfoodworld.com[26] reported in December 2006 that Hershey was under investigation by the United States Department of Justice for systematically discriminating against white Caucasian males in its hiring process. According to sources mentioned in the article at CPG Food World, several subpoenas have been issued and at least one Hershey employee has already agreed to cooperate with federal officials in exchange for a plea deal.
