Why did evangelicals vote for Trump?

Without calling Trump voters stupid, why did evangelicals and christians actually vote for him? Trump lies and decieves (Trump University etc), is selfish, rude, swears, pro choice and so on. He basically ticks all the boxes NOT to vote for him from an evangelical perspective, yet alot of christians still voted for him when they could've just stayed home. And in the primaries they could'v Why is that? Was there any study of this after the election?

In my mother's case, she voted for Trump because she's a stupid, gullible, delusional fool.

Sorry. I couldn't avoid calling my mother stupid. She really is though. This is only one example.

1) Evangelicals are hypocrites. The more somebody talks about religion the more they're trying to hide.

2) A huge number of the people who voted for Trump did so because he was not Hilary. They were not votes FOR him, they were votes for anyone that wasn't her.

I think one of the most telling things was this:

https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixg...vangelicals-to-change-their-tune-on-morality/

The breakdown along religious lines is instructive. Americans without any religious affiliation haven’t shifted much—63 percent in 2011, 60 percent today. Catholic acceptance of politicians’ personal misconduct has increased from 42 to 58 percent. White mainline Protestant support is up by 22 points, from 38 to 60 percent.

These large shifts are dwarfed, however, by the change among white evangelicals. In 2011, only 30 percent believed that personal immorality was consistent with an ethical performance of official duties. Today, 72 percent of white evangelicals—up an astounding 42 points–believe that the two can go together.

Now gee, I wonder what changed. All it took to flip evangelicals 180 on morality was the GOP nominating probably the most immoral candidate for president in modern history. They never cared about moraity issues, they were just convenient excuses for expressing their tribal identity. Once Trump is gone and if/when a major democrat is caught in some morality scandal they will go right back to pretending they care like Trump never happened.

Yep I know a couple that are evangelicals and they think of Obama as the devil and Hillary as his muse so they voted for Trump.

Overall I think a tv quote fits..

In their collective state, the Trump voters are utterly without mercy, driven by one will alone: the will to conquer. They are beyond redemption, beyond reason.

Exactly, it wouldn't have mattered who the democratic candidate was, evangelical voting behavior is dominated by partisan/tribal identity.

Why did evangelicals overwhelmingly vote against Obama, a man who embodied basically all of the characteristics they claimed to want and vote for Trump, a man who violated them all? Simple, they never really cared about those things to begin with. Obama, the moral family man, got 21% of the white evangelical vote. Trump, the immoral serial liar and philanderer got about 85%.

Hillary lies and deceives. She's selfish, she's a crook, she's a lying sack of shit, she's rude, she swears, she stinks like a week old road killed skunk. I'm happy with my choice to vote for President Trump.

To anger you.

The argument that Trump was the lesser of two evils don't hold a single drop of water either.

I was quite curious about this conundrum that evangelicals had to face when it came time to vote for POTUS, so I asked three of them who are solid middle class and personal friends of mine why they chose Trump over Hillary. Every one of them, with the knowledge that I'm a guy with a modicum of political awareness, couldn't give me a straight answer to my face.

I'm pretty sure had they thought that I was, shall we say, like so many other folks who are indifferent toward all things political, they would have given me the standard religious fundamentalist talking points taken directly from the mouths of their church leadership who have been preaching politics from the pulpit so much more than in the recent past.

It seems to me the recent "victories" that our LGBT community have garnered for themselves through the courts have in large part spurred our very religious brethren into a stance that speaks to political activism that frequently crosses over the boundaries that our Constitution prohibits them from. This "overreach" of sorts have of course been taken notice of by the GOP leadership and they are exploiting this situation to their heart's content.

"Divide and Conquer or Else" seems to be the driving force behind the GOP's stance on their existence for being a viable political entity.

Listen to Jesus maybe?
His words about the sick & poor, his words about donation, his warnings about wealth, his message to love all.
I'll agree to disagree about Trump vs Hillary Jesus choice but if it's that important vote for someone who meets those requirements.

Him or roflmouth. Objective truth is immaterial in Trumpistan. It's all about the feels, about joining the chant, the mindless mantra.

Evangelicals voted for Trump because they're convinced that God will use him in some miraculous fashion to ban abortion.
