Why did Apple stop making the 16GB iPod Touch?

I don't like how the iPod touch lineup is today IMO 8GB is too small and 32GB is kind of excessive. I think it ought to be 16GB, 32GB, 64GB rather than 8GB, 32GB, 64GB. Why did Apple drop the 16GB iPod Touch from their lineup?

8GB is there because it's cheap, they give it to other apple customer as gift if they are professor/teacher or other educational related, so 16GB which i suppose will cost least $10 more they are increasing cash by lowering that free ipod touch with MBP or imac purchase if you've .edu email adress.

i guess making 16GB is no point for them since making 32GB will cost about $10 more and they can add up $100 more on price tag. also while available, 16GB ipod touch might not have that much demand compare to 8/32/64GB ipod touches, so no point in investing money on such things (reason dell put stop on their DJ music player)

All of your reasoning makes sense, but doesn't address the question, which is 'why not eliminate the 8GB and make the base model the 16GB'?

Answer, I think that they will with the next refresh. I think that with the 4th gen, putting in the camera, the retina display and making it thinner meant that something had to give to keep their profit margins.

I really hope that the next refresh will have a dual-core processor and a 16GB base model. *wishful thinking

You can almost certainly count on the first part of that. No guarantees about the 16GB though I agree with you.

I also want an IPS display, I greatly prefer the screen of the iPhone over the iPod Touch.

Honestly, I won't be buying an iPod until they implement OLED displays. I currently own a Zune HD and I've used iPhones before and I could not go from OLED back to LCD.

Because 16GB of NAND is more expensive than 8GB, and the iPod Touch is already expensive enough to produce. They want an iPod Touch near $200, and given that everything else (CPU, camera, display) is constant among all models, the only thing they can cut is NAND. So they cut a lot of it.

Well, problem is 16GB is what consumers wish for, but Apple is a business, and 8GB makes more sense to them.

But if you ever see 16GB being the base, that's when Apple suddenly plays charity.

If 16GB was the base model, a lot less people would buy the 32GB. By making the base model a 8GB, an appeal for higher capacity is greater = higher profits = Apple bubble continues. :)
