Why did 802.11b come before 802.11a?

I was looking forward to buying the Orinoco 802.11b networking kit but this review wasn't all that great, I guess if you can overlook it's poor setup then it's worth it.

Eeeek... $459 MSRP for kit... I was lookin more at the $34 card you can get in hot deals and maybe a linksys wireless router 😀

I found it for $265 plus tax and free shipping from necxdirect.com after a $35 off $299 coupon (which expired yesterday 5/15). That's a good deal considering the Orinoco Gold card seems to be the card to get.

I know nothing about networking but I did order the wireless 802.11 internal antennea for my i8200. I am only going to use it to network my 2 pcs together to transfer some small files occasionally. Is the internal one I ordered at least decent?

I think the Dell TrueMobile's are rebadged Orinoco's, although you probably overpaid you're getting an excellent product.

when wireless came out, why didnt they name it 802.11a first? why did they name it 802.11b?

or was it because 802.11a and 802.11b specs came out at the same time and that they were only able to make 802.11b at that time?
