Why could I read the moderator forums?

More or less public knowledge.

The only thing of ... interest ... that you would have found there were the moderator names. But now that they're public, it's slightly less interesting. 😉 Good thing that this happened now rather than before the change in moderation.

You mean the annoying left hand bar that is only open to allow you to see if you have a PM. Yeah, I doubt anyone looks below the PM section of that waste of space.

Usually I have it hidden until I realized it's the only way to see if I have a PM.
