My brother was a moron -- I'm not defending myself with regards to what he did, he deserved a ticket IMO. I am defending what the cop did, i.e. intimidate me, and make it like it was a crime for using my cell phone camera

ok. I was on my way to Shea stadium to a met game -- my brother was driving... when you get off the exit ramp of the Grand Central Parkway there are cops that direct you what lot to go to. If they direct you left, the lot is right by the stadium, if they direct you right the lot is close by. The cop was directing people right at this point. We were leaving early, so my brother rolls down the window and asks the cop rather nicely if he can go to the left, and the cop says "What did I say to you?" my bother says "yes, I understand, can I please go to the left I need to leave early" and he says back "I told you something, I AM A COP, you LISTEN TO ME" so my brother drives towards the right, and (I am not endorsing this manuever, I told him he was a moron for doing this) makes a uturn and heads towards the closer lot. Of course he doesnt get far, a cop on foot gets radioed, and pulls my brother over and says "What did he tell you? He told you something YOU DO WHAT HE SAYS, NOW GO TO HIM" my brother makes a uturn again, goes to the cop who screams at him "YOU DID NOT DO WHAT I TOLD YOU TO DO, GIVE ME YOUR LICENSE AND REGISTRATION RIGHT NOW" and walks away (at this point he is letting people go to the left), the cop takes his time, comes back about 15 minutes later, after just sitting and talking to other cops while waving his hand directing traffic and says "NOW I TOLD YOU WHAT TO DO, I AM BEING VERY VERY NICE I COULD WRITE YOU TICKETS BUT ILL LET YOU GO, IF I SEE YOU AGAIN THAT WILL BE IT, GO TO THE RIGHT LOT NOW" so my brother drives off, we park, then we had to pass the cop on the way back. I was really pissed off... the cop was talking to my brother as if he was his father... like his "power" really got to his head...

so on the way back I took a picture of his car to get the number. his back was turned -- i didn't want to cause any problems and make it very obvious. so apparently he somehow saw this, and screamed for me to come over. and demanded my drivers license. I gave it to him and he must have realized that I wasn't the one driving so he demanded my brother come over and give his license to him. At this point I said extremely politely, can I please have his last name and his badge number, he nods and points to where his badge was... however, he had a vest over it, so I couldn't see it. So I said again can I have your name and badge number? He walked away and got in the car, when I followed him he shouted for me to walk away. So I called up 311 (city information) and got the civilian complaint line for the police, wrote got his car's number, and waited. He sat there filling out paperwork for about 25 minutes. Came out of his car, did not acknowledge me, gave my license to my brother and said "I'm not breaking your balls, my boss tells me what to do, I'm letting you off" then he walks away from him, passes me, not looking and says "your lucky I am a nice guy"... I just wanted to watch the game so I kept walking and didn't say anything...

as he walked by, he had taken his vest off and I got his last name. I don't know if its really worth it to file a complaint. The guy was just a scumbag who wanted to show that he had authority.

My brother was totally wrong in the first place -- but the cops actions were unnecessary IMO.

Can any police officers or similar chime in with their opinions?

Cliffs:

* Was going to Shea Stadium
* Cop was directing traffic either left (closer lot) or right (further lot)
* We were leaving the stadium early, my brother (who was driving) asked the police officer directing traffic if he could please go to the closer lot because we had to leave the game early.
* Cop starts to yell at him as if he was my father "I TOLD YOU WHAT TO DO, NO GO TO THE RIGHT, etc."
* My brother stupidly makes a U turn and heads in the other direction after he passes the cop
* The cop continues to ream my brother about how "(I) TOLD YOU TO GO RIGHT, NEVER EVER DO THAT AGAIN TO ME" etc.
* He tells my brother where to park (the further lot)
* On the way back, I took a picture of his squad car to get his squad car number, I was not trying to cause trouble and I did not make it obvious.
* Somehow he sees it, tells me to give him my license - when I ask for his badge number and name he tells me to look at his badge -- however, he had a vest on, covering said badge, when i approached him aftr that he barked at me.
* 25 minutes fater filling out paper work, he gave my brother my license and as he walked by me, while not looking at me, said "YOU ARE LUCKY I LET YOU GO AND A A NICE GUY"

I am not defending my brothers stupidity for making that turn -- but come on --

I am in no way bad mouthing police officers by any stretch of the imagination, I have nothing but respect for the officers who truly desire to serve and to protect. It's the ones who are cops for the authority (which appears this guy was...)

If everybody wanted to make that left, what is the cop supposed to do? If he did not stand his ground, it would be even worse, because then EVERYBODY would make that left and go against the word of the officer.

I'm not defending my brother. I'm defending myself.

What my brother did was dead wrong.

This cop was trying to intimidate me. What was he going to do, arrest me for using my cell phone camera?

Ah, JP, apparently your idiotic posts in P&N carry over to OT.

for what?

I'm defending my actions, not my brothers.

So in that sense, I should have been ticketed for using my cell phone.

Apparently gestapo tactics are allowed to be used?

Why were you busting the cops balls afterward? If you admit your brother was wrong, then why get the cop's car number afterward? Because your brother couldn't follow simple directions and he got caught?

Right or wrong you should always follow an officers instructions in a situation like this one because theres really no upside for you ... if he decides to screw you over its going to be a hassle no matter how you slice it.

The best possible outcome is nothing happens which is the result of simply complying in the first place so why not save time ... having said this it sound to me like the officer in question was over-reacting, but then so were you.

Edit: Also if you live in NYC and/or plan on ever going back to Shea, DON'T EVEN CONSIDER filing a complaint over this ... again the best-case scenario is that nothing comes of it, but the worst-case is you will be in for a world of hurt if you cross paths with the cop or one of his buddies again!

How did I bust the cops balls?

I discreetly used my cell phone to take a picture of his car number. THat's busting balls these days?

There are good cops and bad cops, just like any profession. You got a bad one. Hopefully when you really need one, you'll get a good one.

for what?

Disordly conduct?

Define my disorderly conduct? Using my cell phone camera, asking a cop for his badge number and last name?

Not you your brother. Disobeying a direct order from a cop after he allready told you no. Im not an expert so the law could be different.

Don't have a chance to read this thread, but I'd say every month or two I see a cop run a red by flipping on his lights for just a second.

There's a good percentage of cops who are just pot bellied bullies, who think they're tough when they're in their darth vader uniforms. NYPD is especially bad, cause they think being a cop means they are god etc. It's also bad or even worse in small towns where the cops look like they are a few chromosomes short or too many, with their uncle serving as the county judge etc.

What law did I break?

you were in a car that broke the law. why did you need his information? You have admitted to be in the wrong several times, yet you still need his badge info and car number? You are an idiot for wasting his time, take the ticket for the law you broke and go home.

thats a ggggrrreaaaatttt gerneralization. Any sources to back that up other than what you have seen on tv? A "good percentage" of 37,000 cops. I love how whenever its an issue on police, everyone is an expert on "bad police" because they got a speeding ticket.
