why changing your oil is important

Inspired by all the auto threads...

I drive a 91 Volvo wagon which has given me few problems except for the exhaust parts needing to be replaced. Last week I had to replace the gas tank since weight in the back barely cracked the rusted up sending unit on the top of the tank, which may have been a source of some older problems.

I change my oil regularly, and after I got this car a year and a half ago, I noticed the oil on the dipstick would go from clear to pitch black in like a week or two after the change. I pay 40 bucks for the valvoline guys to flush a gallon of "kleen-right" through the block and the oil looked cleaner and has for a year now.

For some reason, my car always hated to be run when the engine was cold or the weather was very humid, like on hazy summer or rainy days. It would sputter, and in stop-and-go traffic, stall after a full and complete stop. It only happened when the weather was bad or the engine cold so I didn't think much of taking time to fix it.

2 Weeks ago, I was in the garage with my mechanic and we were diagnosing the problem (gas smell) that resulted in needing a new gas tank and pump. I explain the history of this car having a dirty engine since I got it, so he runs a 3-bottle cleaner through it, one in the tank, one in the engine, and one in the air intake. He says this stuff is powerful and we have to leave the garage as it works it's noxious magic.

so I run the car for a bit, and notice the sputtering problem, but it is even worse. The weather isn't so bad, and I'm even losing power. I'm hoping my engine (volvos have a bulletproof cast-iron block) isn't dying. Black smoke and gas fumes were coming out of my tailpipe and my mileage drops to like 60% of what it was before. I was busy with work and commuting so I didn't check the oil until a few days ago. It was super pitch black, with bits of sediment wiping off on the paper I was using. We changed the oil yesterday and it runs like a top. No more sputtering problems in any conditions. I'm guessing the difference was made by the cleaner breaking crud out of the intake. We should have changed the oil after running the cleaner through the engine, it was so filthy in there.

I'm also guessing that my engine got so dirty on the inside by the previous owner not changing the oil frequently enough. VT hippies like to drive volvos, but lots of them don't know how to run cars.

yup, mine gets changed every 3K miles on the dot...i've gone over by about 50 miles or so but that's it

i ran on no oil for 6 months before i realized it all leaked out. 91 jeep cherokee larado. only difference i noticed when i added oil was the ride was quieter. didn't sound like a diesel engine anymore. :( I miss feeling powerful

If you had no oil your engine would have seized...there had to be something in there.

dunno, dipstick showed nothing :confused:

not a mechanic though, so maybe something was still sloshing around in the pistons or something

Your stick typically only shows how much of 1 quart you are down. May depend on car though. My engine takes 4 quarts.

With my commute my car didnt get oil changed until 4200 miles (manual recommends 3750), this was the second oil change so Im not too worried.... but Im going back to the 3500 mile interval

newwer oils work much better then old ones, so the every 3k is pretty much dead unles sit is turbo or reallty stup etc...

I liek the new mobil oils ( ala 5000, 7500, and mobil1 15K)
The Mobil 7500 seems to be the best bang for the buck. I use that and chage it every 6k.

just don;t use a fram filter and you can do it :p

No, you didn't.

An engine will last about 10 minutes with a dry sump.

No, you didn't.

An engine will last about 10 minutes with a dry sump.

And Jeep 4.0L engines all sound like diesels, with or without oil.

The crap from your intake should not have been able to get into your engine block unless you have massive amounts of blowby. The piston rings separate the intake/combustion chambers from the block where the oil is. If stuff from your intake is making into the engine block and blackening your oil, your piston rings are beat.

I don't think you solved your problems with an oil change.

I have a 92 Volvo 940 Turbo, and it shakes like mad sometimes too. But I change the oil every 3k miles. I think it's just a piece of crap.

true, some have worse piston slap than others at startup too.

Did he run BG44K through it? That stuff is great:)

Anyway, as was pointed out a few posts above, keep a close eye on things. Sometime running harsh cleaning chemicals can actually do more harm then good on older engines. Piston rings that are dry and brittle from age can actually come apart, crack, seperate, etc. and make bad things happen while these chemicals go through the engine:(

I had a truck that was a rough idle and cold start stutter.
Then I put in this product called oilmate, kinda like a slick 50 thing, they don't make it anymore.
It only had 50K miles 'city' on it. Left it idle in the lot and looked out after about 15 min.
The exhaust was just pumping blue crap out I was concerned to be sure.
But after that it ran like a top 15% better mileage and started perfectly for the next 5yrs I owned it.
In the old days I think they used to dump a cup of kerosene in the crankcase for the same result.

At 16 I had been given an 85 Blazer, this was in 1996 mind you. I loved that truck, it had low miles, looked great (my Dad was a GM employee and babied this car from the line!) .. cruised for a few yeras in her.

I knew about oil being needed I guess I miss the change portion. I knew how to check the oil so when it looked low, I added more.

While cruising home one evening bopping to whatever I heard that worst noise. Smoke began to seep up from under the hood. I pulled off. Got help, lil brother showed up.

I had blown the rod through the engine & set a wonderful chain reaction of damage and fire.

She was my first & I will never forget her, I am trying to be nicer to her sister an 89 Blazer now !!!

i have a sixteen year old car that runs well, i attribute that mostly to frequent oil changes

i only changes the spark plugs a couple times. the engine really hasn't ever had any major maintenance done on it

yup between top and bottom mark is 1qt. he had plenty left.well not plenty but enough not to totally die. not good for engine though
