Why celebrate Columbus day?

Heres some cut and paste history of Columbus...a day this country has a holiday after:

Because Columbus captured more Indian slaves than he could transport to Spain in his small ships, he put them to work in mines and plantations which he, his family and followers created throughout the Caribbean. His marauding band hunted Indians for sport and profit -- beating, raping, torturing, killing, and then using the Indian bodies as food for their hunting dogs. Within four years of Columbus' arrival on Hispaniola, his men had killed or exported one-third of the original Indian population of 300,000. Within another 50 years, the Taino people had been made extinct -- the first casualties of the holocaust of American Indians. The plantation owners then turned to the American mainland and to Africa for new slaves to follow the tragic path of the Taino.

This was the great cultural encounter initiated by Christopher Columbus. This is the event we celebrate each year on Columbus Day. The United States honors only two men with federal holidays bearing their names. In January we commemorate the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., who struggled to lift the blinders of racial prejudice and to cut the remaining bonds of slavery in America. In October, we honor Christopher Columbus, who opened the Atlantic slave trade and launched one of the greatest waves of genocide known in history.

We may aswell have a holiday called "Hitler Day"!

P.S..I posted this in another topic but I think it deserves its own thread...lets here some comments

Christopher Columbus was a murderer...

Well duh you just learning that? And so was virtually every leader in the world pre-colonial times. You point is?

As I pointed out in the last thread you cried your eyes out in:

Fusking whiner. Columbus was European. The US didn't exist for another 300 years.

And the Indians themselves weren't saints either. The Euros simply had better technology. Do you honestly think it would have been any different were the tables turned and a post-iron age Aztec culture discovered a pre-bronze age Europe?

Christopher columbus "discovered" america nearly 300 before America was born. If you wanna talk about history, perhaps you should read up a little and find out it was spain who sent Columbus out to bring riches back.

Yep..a drunk and possibly the first among the first slave traders in North America and the Caribbean. But don't forget that while Bus was just starting his slave trade it was well established among the black African Chieftains for many generations.

Cried my eyes huh?....lol...wow

You're whining like a bitch about something that happened not only 300 years before the founding of the US, but 500 years before any of us were born.

Get over it.

BTW, I see you're also going to whine over the term "Indian." Get over that too. None of you are "Native Americans" because you all came from Asia... and before that, Africa. We're all "Native Africans" if you want to play that stupid game.

Well, Chris was all that and then some, I am sure. The thing is that he kinda tripped across America, and brought it to the attention of Western culture. He didnt have anything to do with making the US what it is today. Other europeans did that. The time was ripe for some european to find the Americas, and he happened to be the one.

Oh! My bad ...so who was it that declared Columbus Day a holiday? did that happen before aMERICA was born too?...and we just kinda blindly decided to carry on the tradition of a great holiday?

LMK please all ya edumacated peeps........

You know, Sparky, it IS possible to honor someone without agreeing with everything that they did. Columbus, as someone said, brought the Americas to the attention of the world stage, thus paving the way for the founding of the western hemisphere. Were mistakes (huge, collosal mistakes) made? Were atrocities commited? Indeed. But humans have been committing atrocities since the first cavedude walked out and thought his neighbor had a better rock than he did. Stop whining about the past and work to make the future better.

And talking of "edumacated", you dumbass, any third-grader would know this is wrong

The United States honors only two men with federal holidays bearing their names.

Ever heard of george washington?

Boy, the writer of that article sure is smart!

I do agree that we should reconsider celebrating columbus day. We all know the Vikings like myself discovered america and got along fine with the "native americans".

?? Man you need some sleep...I read what I pasted on a website and got to wondering why we celebrate Columbus day. I dont think anyone owes me shit...I work for everything I got.....

And why shouldn't we be? Being proud of ones history doesn't necessarily mean ignoring the problems of the past, you know. But I challenge you to find ONE country on this planet that doesn't have a violent, cruel history. That's how nations are formed, and denying it shows a level of ignorance that's astounding. EVERY country has something about its past that latter day moralists would bitch and moan about.

Maybe you shouldn't be shocked and offended when people disagree with you, yes? And you're not exactly the saint of restraint in this thread, and have been fairly abusive of others.

Maybe YOU should take "yur" prozac and go to bed.

This reminds me of a Chris Rock rutine where he says he'd take the day off for the Grand wizard of the KKK if declared a national holiday.

Maybe your right🙂

Didn't we dump Washington's birthday for Presidents Day?:Q Because otherwise, I'm getting cheated out of a holiday here.😛
