Why cant we have smaller bezels and thinner phones?

I'm just wondering, is there some enormous unseen electronic piece that needs an extra inch to an inch and a half of space? I currently own an Optimus V. It has a 4.5" height and the screen height is less than 3". It's more than 4.5 oz. Not terrible but not great, either. I'm shopping for a new single core Android phone that is more screen and less phone, and there is literally NOTHING. Sure the Xperia Tipo is thinner and lighter but it's still the same bezel situation everywhere, 2 years after the fact, WHAT GIVES PEOPLE??

/end rant

Why do you desire a single core phone? Almost all operating systems have some background processes going on which is why two cores are desirable. More than that really depends on what the OS and apps are doing.

Phones aren't all screen because you need some place to put the microphone, front facing camera, earpiece speaker, proximity sensor to turn off the screen when on your face, ambient light sensor to detect brightness, etc... All of this stuff only works on the front of the phone.

That space isn't going away.

What a stupid rant.
You have an Optimus V and bitch about the large bezel and thick phone.
Thats like me getting a Corolla and bitch how slow it is and it doesn't handle well.

Well basically, I prefer a single core phone since I mainly use Android phones for a) a standardized UI with customizations and b) a Webkit HTML5 browser experience. I don't think I really need dual core, in that yes a dual core is smoother overall, but it also means bigger battery, bigger phone, bigger screen and I prefer my phones small and lightweight. A little lag can be annoying but it doesn't really bother me.

Lol I know, I liked my little OV but it's over two years old now and I'm looking for something new. That's why I'm shocked that even after all this time, the bezel size to screen ratio is more or less the same.

And to the guy above who said that single core is the low end, well point taken, hardware wise we ARE the low end, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't get any style. LG seems to agree, at least partially, the new Optimus L7 is a single core but very sleek and stylish. It's just that the screen bezel is about the same 🙁

The funny thing is that I was going to use the LG L7 as an example of a thin/thin bezel single core phone.
I don't see how can you look at the L7 and say it still have large bezels.
Thats the least amount of bezels on ANY phone, single or double core.

I have to say, if I really obsess on it, I then to hate the look of most phones, and unfortunately the style trends are moving backward, not forward. That LG L7 looks great though- like finally a design from 2012 not a throwback to 1973. (Like that hideous POS 2nd LG phone. Whoever even called that mess 'design' should have been beaten with the prototype. Why the hell would it ever make sense to surround a rectangular screen with puffy fugly rounded plastic bezels from hell??? It's just beyond useless.

Even Samsung has been moving in reverse. The original SGS2 looked fantastic, probably the best looking cellphone made. Then I noticed versions of it that started to get that hideous backward-ass 'round' look that instantly makes everything look cheap and 'kid sister' toyish.

Now we get the SGS3- meh. It's not hopeless, but that wretched roundness makes it look older/clunkier/cheaper than the original SGS2. Why would you purposefully move your product design in reverse? Like if that 2nd POS LG phone were the 'new' one, and the L7 was the 'old'?

I want a phone that looks like this:

galaxy-s-iii-concept_1-640x342.jpg

No gimmicks, no hideous backward-trending 'retro' styling, no awful roundness, no useless wasted bezel space, screen as big and unobstructed as it can possibly be. That should be a flagship phone from 2012, not half of these chunky/clunky kids' toy looking monstrosities we actually have to choose from.

Looking back at this era from a future where things actually DO look futuristic and sleek- half the crap being made now is going to inspire snickers and smirks from people that can't believe anyone ever thought any of this kiddie-toy looking crap was 'cool'.

Yeah the LG Optimus L7 is pretty thin.

I guess I meant the L3 then. Why can't it have thin bezels too? I'm just really annoyed. I feel like if I want to pay money for a small screen phone with small bezels I should get that. Instead I'm forced to buy a large screen phone to get it. And I don't like carrying large screen phones in my pocket.

Yeah I am really griping and groaning too much here, I guess.

Zaap I am really obsessing on it. Really. And right now I am throwing a tantrum because I looked for hours on Phonearena.com for a sleek and stylish single core, small screen phone that looks something like the photo you posted. And there was no such thing. All that time wasted, hoping for something but instead it's the Samsung Galaxy Y, Galaxy W, Galaxy Mini, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Pocket, 5 Samsung Galaxy phones and unfortunately each one looks like the same thing: a regurgitated rubber turd molded into a plastic slab. Sigh.

Dude, I totally agree with everything you said.
I just can't get over the styling of the SG3.
To me, its just a nicer, thinner version of the Palm Pre.
Same shape and thats not a nice thing.
Plus, I've messed with it and it feels plasticky all over.
Damm, make it with other materials beside glossy plastic.
If the LG 4x were here, I'd be all over that instead of the GS3.
The LG 4x looks like the old SG2 which is so much better looking than the SG3

No offense but what you're looking for is not realistic.
Why would a manufacturer put in the R&D to developing a thin, small bezel single core phone only to sell it as a lower tier phone ??
Nothing to gain from it.

Hmm, yeah that's a good question.

Is it unrealistic to want a thin ultra small, single core Android? I guess I didn't think so, but maybe I'm wrong.

I was operating under the assumption that moving or shrinking a design from one phone to another wouldn't be so difficult. Is that not plausible? Example: can't they just take the thin bezels and everything from the L7 and plug in a smaller 3.5" screen, hence making a smaller phone?

Check out the Sony Xperia Ray, it's very small, has a 1 Ghz Qualcomm 8255, with a 297ppi 854x480 3.3" display that supposedly looks phenomenal. It got an upgrade to ICS like all 2011 Sony devices. Same 8.1 Mp Exmor camera as the Arc.

You want them even thinner? Where the hell is the battery supposed to go? What you call going "forward" in design would actually be going backwards in battery life. But hey, who cares if you can only get a few hours out of your phone as long as it looks good... right?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I care about the actual utility of a device over it's superficial looks. The fact that you're looking at single core means you are NOT the user these companies are looking for. It's taken more ram, dual core, and several OS updates to get Android to run smooth. It boggles the mind why you'd want to throw all that away just to get a slimmer phone. Do you plan on actually turning it on or do you just want to hang it on your wall and stare at it. If you plan on using it then wouldn't you want it to actually work as designed?

I'll cut you a break though because you're in CO Springs. All that smoke has probably gone to your head and is making you delerious.

What is this? Concept? Is this real?

IIRC was a concept for the SGS3 that someone made, or maybe the nexus i cant remember but yea a phone that looked like that would be amazing

Dual and quad core phones have both better battery life and performance and because of that every single high end phone uses one. The Galaxy S3 for example has a small bezel and even with a 4.8" screen it is barely larger than the 4.3" Galaxy S2.

Like it or not large, powerful phones are what most consumers want, even Apple will be increasing the screen size on the next iPhone.

Also, these multi-core processors have the ability to shut cores down so if your phone only needed 1 core to run what was active than it would be only using 1 core.

Might be possible, but I have a feeling that with a limited amount of bezel and a large screen, it's going to end up registering a lot of unwanted touch events. The problem actually gets worse with the larger screen as it requires reaching further to touch certain parts of the screen. Could be solved with good case design, I suppose, but I have a feeling that designs like this have been tried and rejected before.
