Why can't Vista64 see my linux printer?

I've got my HP printer plugged into my Ubuntu 7.10 box, which detected it immediately and prints without issue. Both the Ubuntu Printing Admin tool and the CUPS browser front end say the printer is shared, published and awaiting jobs.

However, Vista cannot see it. It doesn't find it in autodetect. Vista doesn't see the Ubuntu box either.

My WinXP box can see the Ubuntu box, and the printer, and print.

So why can't Vista? Any ideas?

So Vista can't see or detect the printer?...Did you check there are Vista x64 drivers for your printer?..I know HP does not have very good Vista x64 support unlike Canon.

Btw does the printer work if you plug it directly into your Vista PC?

Well, its an HP Deskjet 930C. According to HP's website, drivers are included with the OS. I haven't tried plugging it into the Vista box because it sits too far away.

I would plug it in so Vista can detect it and also install the drivers.

Make sure Samba's running on the Linux box if you want to access the printer that way. If you want to print directly to CUPS you'll have to figure out how to install an IPP printer in Vista.

Because Vista is more secure by default it has network discovery turned off by default.

Go to Control Panel
Network and Internet
Network and Sharing Center
Turn on Network Discovery.

Should resolve your issue for you.

Alternatively you may be able to manually add the printer should you know the share name.

Network discovery has been on. Still doesn't see the printer.

Hmm...

can you manually add it then?

Have you checked the firewall settings on the Vista machine?

Is the Vista machine wireless while the others are wired?

No, the Vista machine cannot even see the Ubuntu box in the Network browser.

I haven't tried completing turning off the Firewall yet, but File and Printer sharing is checked on the exception list.

All of these machines are currently on wired connections

Can you at least ping the Ubuntu machine from Vista?

Yes, I can ping the Ubuntu box from Vista. Ubuntu can see the Vista box, though things get problematic when I try to access any of the shared folders from Ubuntu. Ubuntu prompts for a user name and pwd, which would be an account setup on Vista. I enter the same user name and pwd that I log onto windows with, and ubuntu kicks out an 'Access denied' every time, with and without putting the work group name. When I had Ubuntu 7.04 installed on my notebook, this occurred as well, however, it spontaneously began working and I never followed up.
