Why can't prisions be self sustaining?

I think we should start sending people to Siberia. It worked pretty well for the Russians. If you get out of there, you can have another shot. They could show Star Trek 5 to give people tips on how to make it. The Russians get free labor to dig for oil or whatever, our prisoners are kicked out of the country and not overcrowding our jails. Make a reality series out of it and that's the definition of win-win-win, my friends.

it's still a billion dollar industry, the govt doesn't make money off it, but everyone else does, guards, food services, health providers etc etc.

if you got rid of say 70% of prisons and sent the "hardcore" prisoners all to siberia, there would be a lot of people out of jobs. then they would in turn (some anyway) turn to crime and voila, more people to send to siberia.

Most prisons that aren't maximum security have factory complexes on them and the prisoners are required to work. And yes, they do have access to tools, which is always a problem.

No I never even mentioned the word government. So I think you should put away your jump to conclusions mat. Most prisons are privately owned and operated therefore they have no incentive to be self sustaining.

In 2003 - 2004, California alone had a $5.8 billion prison budget. I suppose the convicts could cultivate coca or indica, but other than that... The system is a bloated pigfest.
