Yeah yum and those other programs are great but if the app isn't in the repository your screwed. It really is a bad solution why should a user be dependent on the distro to support every application he wants to use. It also requires a lot of rework. There are what 50 distros out there each one has two make there own packages for every application.
Of course all the linux fan boys will pretend it is the best thing sence sliced bread.
I can't vouch for Linux distros, but I know the various BSD packaging systems use stuff from others. I've seen plenty of porters mention they got something from FreeBSD or pkgsrc.
If something isn't in the repository, make it and get it in there. It's a community effort. Chances are, most applications not in a repository (especially one the size of Debian's 😕 ) aren't worth using in the first place.
