Why can't I watch a dvd on my pc with a GF4 Ti4200?

I've been messing around with a couple of video cards. The ATI 9500PRO and the GF4 Ti4200. The 9500PRO with the ATI software has fantastic dvd playback, but the NVidia card sucks. It will hardly even play the dvd. It's not smooth at all and the images are ghosting horribly. I'm using a trial version of the NVDVD just to let you know. Now.. Why can't I watch a dvd on my pc with the GF4 and a XP1800+ Processor?

I didn't want to spend an extra $100 for a ATI video card, but if the playback for dvd is this crappy for Nvidia cards, I might just have to.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have never used NVDVD before, but I have definatly watched dvds on my GF4 Ti4200 that I used to have. Have you tried using something like WinDVD or PowerDVD? I have always liked power dvd myself. You may wanna give that a shot. Also, if you play games, you may want to consider spending the extra $100 anyway for DX9 support.

The problem is not in the graphics card.

You could use an mx version of Geforce4 and it will work fine.

If you are switching between cards in the same system, then you are having driver conflict problems.
Same with DVD software. Multiple installations can cause havok.

If you do want superior playback, then you can't beat the 9500+ video cards. ATI's overlay is far better than nvidia.

The DVD software is the second culprit.
I highly recommend getting Windvd instead of Nvidia's or ATI's DVD players. I have used all of them and Windvd definately is the best. (Right now anyway.)
Nvida, ATi, and PowerDVD all display artifacts that are very annoying.

Well.. That pisses me off. After deliberating for a week about what card to keep and finally deciding on the GF4 because it's a lot cheaper, I'm pissed that I can't play a dvd on my system. I tried PowerDVD and WinDVD just now and both of them play the same as NVDVD. It barely plays and then is really choppy. Certainly unusable.

You say that I might have a conflict? How do I find out if I do? How do I resolve this? I do have a driver cleaner btw that I've been using between installations of the ATI and NVidia cards.

Thanks again. 🙁

DVD playback wouldn't even cause that system to break a sweat.
Oh man.. I was really hoping that you wouldn't say that. That's a lot of work. What I don't get is that I can through the ATI card back in my system right now and then play a dvd fine. So.. Why is it affecting the other software and not the ATI software?

Are you sure that a GF4 Ti4200 with a XP1800+ will playback dvd smoothly? I want to be sure before I go through all this work.

Thanks again.

I was playing DVD's in software back when i had a PII 300... it's not the hardware. Try a different set of Det's and see what happens.

How do I check if DMA is enabled on my drive in Windows XP Pro? I can't find any settings. I wonder if that's the culprit because the ATI card is a hardware dvd card also, isn't it?

Control Panel, system, system devices, Insert your ide controller properties here, it's in there on a drop down menu

It's definitely a driver or software problem. I've played tons of DVDs on my Ti4200 using PowerDVD and WinDVD seamlessly. DVDs even play on my old P3 with an 8MB RIVA TNT.

Do a google search for "Driver Cleaner Download"

It will get rid of ATI and Nvidia drivers completely - should be no need to format your system.

At least try that first before you do format!
