Print Server is HP JetDirect J2691A (parallel)
Printer is Brother HL-5140
Hub is Hawking PN500TB (10 Mb, 5-port, unmanaged)
Router is Netgear MR814 http://www.netgear.com/products/details/MR814.php
All wiring is RJ-45 terminated Cat-5e

Cable Modem ---> Router/Switch (4-port, all used)
----> PC2
----> PC3
----> PC4
----> Hub (5-port, 2 used)
----> PC1
----> Print Server ----> Printer

I ran out of ports on my router when I was trying to add a print server. I had an extra hub so I disconnected one of the PCs (call this PC1) near the printer, and plugged that ethernet line (i.e. the one running from the router) into the hubs UPLINK port. Then connected the hub to PC1 and the Print server.
In this configuration, I can connect to the internet on the PC1 but when I hit "Test" on the print server to get the IP for setting up printers I get 0.0.0.0.
So, I disconnected the hub and ran a line directly from the router to the jetdirect, cycled the power and was able to get a real IP address (xxx.xxx.0.5). But I can't use it in this way (PC1 needs a connection). So I put it back on the hub. I can use PC1 but:
* when I log in to the router's administration only the PCs on the router and PC1 on the hub are listed as "Attached Devices"
* I can't ping the Print Server's IP

What may be causing this? Can this be fixed without buying more equipment?

thanks

A crossover from the router to the hub perhaps. It's an older device that prob. does not auto sense.
